At Headway East London, we see the positive impact that adult social care has on our membersβ lives every day, from our Community Support Workers helping members to live more independently, to our Therapy Service which supports members to adapt to their new lives after brain injury.

Adult social care supports millions of us to live the lives we want to lead. But right now, it's at crisis point. Weβre supporting the @adass.bsky.social #CareCantWait campaign, shining a light on the impact good care and support can have and striving to build a care service we can depend on.

Statement on the Welfare Reform Bill | Headway East London
On Tuesday the Welfare Reform Bill β proposing changes to the benefits system β was passed into law. Here's our response.
We will continue to work hard to ensure our membersβ voices are represented, and that these policies work together to deliver the best outcomes possible for people living with #braininjury. πͺ

The text on a painted background reads: βI can only speak for myself, but I can only imagine what it's like for others like me, with a brain injury; low self-esteem, shattered dreams, one after the other, so to lose some money of what's so rightfully ours will be somewhat similar to losing a lover. Devastating and degrading to say the least, but we do get it's still not enough for two simple reasons; people with brain injuries won't get any better and we're getting older. Our brain injury controls us; we can't plan anything!β ~ Jason
The text on a painted background reads: βDear Sir/Madam, I can still remember emerging from a coma in an A&E department, watching my vital signs on the bedside monitors and thinking how very lucky I was to be paralysed down one side of my body, with no power of speech and almost but not completely incontinent. And how much I loved taking as much money off the government as possible after a working lifetime of paying income tax and national insurance for events such as these. I decided there and then to not recover ever so that I could steal as much as possible. Yours faithfully, Stuart"
We have already responded to the Governmentβs consultation on changes to the welfare
system, informed by our membersβ experiences.

For 27 years #co-production has been at the core of how we work at Headway East London with our members β who are experts by experience in brain injury.
We will be reaching out to Stephen Timms β who is also the MP for East Ham β to see how we can contribute to this review.

Any changes to PIP will only take place after the #welfare minister, Stephen Timms, has conducted a review of the benefits system by Autumn 2026.
We welcome the governmentβs commitment to #co-produce the Timms review with disabled people.

The governmentβs own poverty analysis shows that despite these concessions, 150,000 of the most vulnerable people would end up in relative poverty as a result.
With 1.3 million people in the UK living with the effects of #braininjury itβs crucial that the impact of the changes are fully considered.

A group of men and women sit round a table. There is a microphone at the centre, and name tags and a bright yellow notebook around the outside. One name tag reads Claire Stone - Headway East London. There is a vaulted ceiling and arches above, an old chapel.
The beautiful courtyard of St. Ethelberg's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace - with a hanging lantern, mosaic paving and stain glass windows, white walls and potted plants around the edges. It looks peaceful and serene.
