This was a lovely morning, momma watching me like a hawk! 🫶

A male kestrel has gray edges to its wings and dark spots along its chest. One of the smallest raptors it generally hunts small rodents or insects. Here it is sitting on a metal post at Ridgefield NWR, looking out over the grassy fields.

Here’s a back view of a female kestrel, sitting on a sign at Ridgefield NWR. See the difference in the wing edges (no dark gray) and her chest would be more streaky without black spots.

I've only seen 1 American Kestrel in real life--a memorable, short photo session! (I think a young one...?)

This was taken recently at Cape May. Funny story—I thought I had taken many photos of kestrels, only to discover later that the ones I misidentified were actually Merlins. So now I have plenty of Merlin photos.

All I have to offer for today’s #birdoftheday “beautiful kestrel” challenge is a measly, distant flyover shot of a kestrel against drab overcast sky.

I missed yesterday’s #BirdOfTheDay 🤦🏻‍♀️
For today’s theme, here is a Nankeen #Kestral letting me know just how aggro it was with me, for startling the finches it was trying to catch. Taken with my iphone almost a year to the day, at Maree, in South Australia.

In the picture, a common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) can be seen sitting on a bare branch of a tree. The kestrel is looking to the right of the image. The bird's plumage is reddish-brown with dark spots on its back, and its head is gray. The sky in the background is bright blue.
