Mussels bound for new home upstream
In August, a consulting firm that specializes in rare, threatened and endangered species will begin the process of relocating mussels in the Ohio River to make way for the companion bridge that will be built as part of the Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project.

The Brent Spence Bridge was constructed in the 1960s to carry around 80,000 vehicles/day, but the daily I-75/I-71 traffic load is now 160,000 vehicles. Because I-75 is a key freight corridor, the congestion impacts commerce & commuters who travel the corridor in the eastern U.S.

The selected companion bridge design is a cable-stayed independent deck bridge. Instead of using a traditional steel truss to support the bi-level bridgeβs lower deck, both decks will be supported by a cabling system.
