The Earls.
We name them after the greatest 0’s manager Earl Weaver. Known for not taking shit and kicking dirt.
A few snapshots from today's #SABRDay proceedings. Some great presentations. See yinz again in May!
Almost back to baseball season, folks, even if it doesn't look like it outside. And to help you get in the mood, less than one week until the next SABR Day at PNC Park. Admission $5, tentative agenda attached.
If you are a journalist who speaks out against the fascist Trump administration I’m sorry to say that it’s time to get your affairs in order. They’re doing a trial run arresting Black journalists right now and it’s only a matter of time until they come for all of us.
Wake up. Speak out.
Join us for SABR Day on Saturday, January 31! We have dozens of baseball events scheduled all over North America; all fans are welcome to attend, virtually or in-person: sabr.org/latest/join-...
Please take a moment to remember Hall of Famers Stan Musial and Earl Weaver who passed away on this date 13 years ago.
thank you for reading. Earl's memoir is a fun addendum.
Finished this audiobook. It was good. I always want more depth but that's a me problem not the book's problem.
I was thrilled to arrive home from our holiday earlier this week to find that this gorgeous thing had arrived from @thetwinbill.bsky.social
I'm grateful! So nice to think of the book reaching some readers who are on its wavelength.
Things I learned today from the book about Earl Weaver: what bench jockeying is and the scene in Bull Durham where Costner fights with the ump is based on Weaver.

My patience has paid off and now I'm listening to a book about the best baseball manager ever: Earl Weaver.
Earl Weaver was the first non-Yankee manager to win three consecutive pennants since the 1930s.
Ha, that's good. That's the book that hooked me. I read it when I was 11 or something in Brussels, and was captivated by the voice. Way more fun and interesting than other sports memoirs I was reading.
That is fun. What did you say in your report??
Happy World Cup year
The Last Manager: How Earl Weaver Tricked, Tormented, and Reinvented Baseball (2025) by John W. Miller
A delightful look at one of the most important and fun figures in baseball history.
If anyone is looking to make a holiday donation, the scholarship in my nephew’s name is a fine choice.

One explanation for Bari killing the story is that she did so as a public act of fealty to the administration. But another is that, as an inexperienced journalist, she doesn’t understand that a refusal to go on the record is a kind of comment in and of itself
The Olivia Nuzzi story and the Bari Weiss at CBS story are the same story, which is that the upper echelons of legacy media are absolutely rife with people who worship power and don't feel burdened by any sense of responsibility to their profession or the public.
I finished this last week and this book is so much fun there should probably be some FDA guidance on how much of it is safe to consume in one 24-hour period
60 Minutes is one of only two documentary-style public affairs programs left on the air. The other is Frontline on PBS, which saw its funding gashed by the Trump admin and Congress. They have a matching donation rn.

Every December, until around 40 years ago, town leaders in Moundsville, WV erected a giant Christmas tree on top of the Grave Creek Mound.
