women exposed to carcinogens who will come home to a government that will put off providing care as long as they can and deny cancers are service related until there are enough lawsuits and deaths (again, see burn pits and fun things like Agent Orange).
One thing that’s been on my mind since seeing images of the oil burning in Iran is, if ground troops are sent… they’ll be breathing that air. Burn pits but on steroids. To be clear, nobody should have to breath what is in the air there right now, but now we’ll have another generation of men and …
Whoa. This is big. "The U.S. Navy has refused near-daily requests from the shipping industry for military escorts through the Strait of Hormuz since the start of the war on Iran, saying the risk of attacks is too high for now." www.reuters.com/world/middle...
I would :)
If we are at a point where we can have whimsy and calves having birthday photo sessions with balloons, I’m here for it.
I had a friend who at one point told me we weren’t going to have a conversation about who we each were voting for because we wouldn’t change each others minds and they had to vote for who was best for the troops. I think about that conversation daily.
Am I exhausted and should be sleeping? Yes. Am I binge watching The Pitt instead of sleeping? Also yes.
1/ On yesterday’s @lastweektonight.com about USAID, John Oliver cited several of our investigations.
First up was our reporting about how DOGE operatives had arbitrarily cut aid programs, in some cases by literally clicking through a spreadsheet: propub.li/4cCsSKP
My mom sewed what she could and my parents relied heavily on my grandparents. My grandparents canned everything you can think of and most of our meat came from what my dad hunted and fished, and produce from what he foraged or grew. Sometimes he’d buy meat direct from farmers.
This thread is dead on.
My mom didn’t work when I was a kid (couldn’t afford to; she had seven kids) but she did every home repair she could manage, never bought premade food, we wore hand me downs and rarely had ”new” clothes, AND…
If we can agree on any one thing in 2026 can we please agree to just stop changing the time after this last time? There’s no purpose to it. Let’s just all agree to stop.
'...exposed UK museums and universities as “imperial charnel houses where the bones of Indigenous peoples torn from Britain’s empire in the past, with little or no regard to the spiritual sensibilities of its people, continue to be retained to this day in circumstances that beggar belief”.'
Finally finished my timelapse of the lunar eclipse under the aurora in Fairbanks, Alaska! Check out the massive substorm turning the ground green in front of the eclipse, too!
This is one of my favorite timelapses I have captured!
Historians are quite capable of explaining the hellscape that is the US at this particular minute, and its kind of telling that you imagine we won't because it means you haven't been listening or reading
Stephen Fry: “I’m deeply worried by the darkening shadow that’s going over the world, a shadow that we have to call fascism”
Laura Kuenssberg: “You would use that word?”
Stephen Fry: “Oh absolutely. It’s a cult of power; and power only speaks to power”

March 8, 2026 - Tehran at sunrise today. But the sun is hidden behind a sky filled with smoke. After a night of intensive strikes on oil facilities, thick black clouds now hang over the city, turning morning into something that feels like night.
Happy International Women’s Day from UCD Press 💐

Same.
OpenAI head of robotics just resigned over company deal with the Pentagon saying…
“Surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got”
Like a lot of things rich guys believe and fund, the AI consciousness thing is in part driven by a desire to abscond from the responsibility of what they've made. It also explains why so many of them think we're in a simulation. Doesn't matter if everybody died if we're all just 1s and 0s baby!
DURBIN: Is DHS required to follow federal court orders?
NOEM: Yes sir, and we do
DURBIN: How do you explain that your agency has repeatedly violated them, as your own administration has admitted?
NOEM: We follow them when they apply
DURBIN: I'm sorry
'Amharc Éireann', a collection of archive newsreels which were filmed across Ireland in the 1950s and early 1960s, have been released on the Irish Film Institute's archive player
The “big picture” here, to use Axios lingo, is that for a year team Trump has destroyed important counter-terror tools and diverted counter-terror personnel to immigration enforcement.
And that Patel, Noem, & Gabbard have no qualifications and are riotously incompetent.

Our senior dog used to sleep until 10 am. That gradually shifted until now she’s an alarm that starts grumping at 5 am and if we dare sleep later than that whining at 6 am.
I think about this Tony Benn speech much more than I used to
Social media created this nonsense idea that not exposing yourself to hatred is isolationist. Choosing to not spend your free time with bigots isn’t living in a bubble. I don’t need to know what’s going on at X. I won’t be smarter or more knowledgeable or empathic by being there. Neither will you.
Please don't post photos of dead children, or videos of dead children, or yell DONT LOOK AWAY. You are sick. Log off. Touch grass. You have PTSD and are inflicting it on us all. If you are not in media/ a conflict researcher/ etc you do NOT need to consume Horrors. Blocking lots right now.
How to understand war with Iran? We must get away from propaganda. Facts suggest two interpretive frameworks: a foreign war as a mechanism to destroy democracy at home; and a foreign war as an element of personal corruption by the president of the United States.

We’ve been doing this with basically anything we want to rewatch. You can get a lot of physical media pretty low cost used. It feels so weird to go back to physical media but if you want to see something again… it’s what you have to do.
