True story. I was talking to Jim Davila at church coffee hour when my wife was doing her masters at St Andrews, and I used the phrase "ex libris" when I meant "ultra vires" (we were talking about run-up to the War in Iraq). To his credit, he said "Pardon?" & I repeated myself & he just let it slide.

To be clear, I think "machine learning" is as anthropomorphic as "artificial intelligence". Learning and intelligence perform the same role, they imply uniquely biological or psychological capacities to the machine or artifact through their use in the phrase.
