I used a bunch of my convention money, from the past two i had, to pay off another student loan! 🎉💪 i know if i stay strict about it'll still take a couple years to pay it off (and the state of things could make this effort all for naught) but can only plan for what i can control in my life 🫠

hope that helps? i just wanted to offer how I'm thinking about this so im not in debt all the time and can still expand what I'm offering at con.

Even when I feel ready for a standee or more expensive merch item I'm ordering like 5-10 max on the first go around. I can order more! I cannot force them to sell! I have shirts and charms i can't even give away from over ordering and flopping. I try to avoid it now cuz I can only hold onto so much

I wouldn't go off and start making Aria standees, charms, pillows, enamel pins, etc. before feeling this out. small batch of prints doesn't go well im out maybe like 30-40 bucks since I only ordered like 10-15 prints. same for sticker. tiny batch, goes well i can order again.

I made Aria merch, a print and a sticker(the sticker I've had forever the print is new but is big enough to see from afar unlike the sticker)so when people come up excited I have niche thing then i might add i have sticker as well! they usually buy it because there isn't anyone else with aria stuff

after my initial rant of make stuff you like! this has a fat asterisk next to it that is saying do not over invest in anything before you know your market. get like some stickers or a print together of that thing you're feeling out. save ur wallet from extreme pain of having a bad flop

If you still want that thing at your booth offer something unique! If every ones got charms and enamel pins, then try a different approach. try merch of your fave ships, try writing a small comic, try risoprinting/screenprinting/linocut etc.

anyway I can't overstate how important it is you make art of stuff you like. you can like trendy stuff for sure! that's why it's trendy! but fighting for the same dollar between 400 artists who also have that thing is just kinda asking for a bad time.

I've been selling in AA for 13 years at this point, I'm def stuck with merch of stuff I don't even like that much trying to follow advice about trends n stuff I saw online. Only now am I circling back and focusing on printed goods like I did when I first started and undoing some of that damage.

anyway, point is every artist in AA can give advice and tell you what's selling well and what cons to go to and you'll get a different answer from each artist lol. running business comes with risk, you might learn things expensively but so did every artist in there

(because the other elephant in the room is the fact that people have options for higher quality stuff much more readily available in their day to day than they used to. hot topic, box lunch, FYE, fuckin walmart has anime stuff now) and you bet they are doing all that market research mentioned in op

but what I have started doing is making more merch I want, as in stuff I would buy myself if I were out n shopping. bringing back IP that I presumed was dead but I still enjoyed. trying to make stuff I haven't seen before in terms of the kind of merch and what's on it.

I have friends that are charm city, that's the bulk of what they sell: no prints, just charms, stickers maybe, standees.
meanwhile I sell hardly any charms, and I have the popular and new stuff, that's not what people want from me which is why im phasing them out.

Someone could tell me, hey drawing JJK has made so n so artist big money. That has 0 effect on my decisions as a business. that artist likely has standing in their fandom either through fan art, doujin, actively partaking in a ship or something, they've been working on demand outside on their own.

there's a much better chance you will attract customers, with genuine thought and interest in what you are selling and how you brand your work/booth. because yes it is a business at teh end of the day, you should be evaluating how YOUR merch is doing, what is working and what isn't.

this is such a hard lesson for new AA sellers to learn: you cannot create demand as much as you think you can.

you can market and brand and influence your way to a point, but if you trend chase or do what this response is asking it will not create demand for your work.
