The Spanish right supports banning the use of burka and niqab in public spaces. The argument for the policy seems to be (partly) that it will promote the emancipation of women.

We happen to have evidence that a similar policy in France had the *opposite* effect.

Reform and Greens undermining UK commitment to Nato, Cooper says

Horseshoe theorising is not only cynical, it is also incredibly dangerous as all it does is legitimise the far right, while demonising any alternative left of centre

Sadly, it's the only trick the failed hegemony has in its bag and if that leads to the far right in power, it doesn't matter to them

Against scientific evidence and just an act of pure cruelty. The Labour government's school guidance is an attack on basic freedoms and rights of LGBTQ+ people. It's ridiculous to think that these cowards and opportunists are the right people to defend this country's democracy against the far right.

nete Typen identifiziert: 1. organisationale Strategien, 2. Netzwerkarbeit, 3. politische
Bildung, 4. Proteste und 5. Offentlichkeitsarbeit.

It doesn't have to be like this. A 2,000-word profile of Tino Chrupalla is neither inevitable nor reflective of
balanced reporting. Such pieces instead amplify far-right discourses, while anti-racist/-fascist perspectives -or even accounts by those targeted by the far right- are in short supply.5/5

We find that journalists are often oblivious to far-right normalisation strategies. Even when adopting a critical tone, they're frequently outmatched by media-savvy far-right actors who skillfully use the platform they're given to legitimise their politics. 4/5

Such accounts privilege far-right talking points. @zeit.de for example, quotes the claim that Chrupalla's car was "stolen by Polish people". Neither fact-checked nor contested, this reproduces a classic xenophobic stereotype and serves to justify the AfD's call for a closed border to Poland. 3/5

Another case of far-right normalisation through humanisation: readers learn about Chrupalla's hobbies, favourite films, and family struggles, while there's frightfully little pushback against his most blatant attempts to justify the AfD's racist politics. 1/5

For the FES, I wrote a short brief about how mainstream party strategies have fueled far-right success. They move toward more anti-immigration positions to win voters back. This does not work, but shifts public opinion to the right. Parties then react to shifts in public opinion. A vicious cycle.

We have untrained ourselves of interrogating the core problems of border migration because we have allowed the media di divest from good reporting from the front.

We only get to this conversation when tragedies like this happen, but it is not enough.
