Istg if @commodoreofficial.bsky.social goes the route of Nintendo, which it currently seems to be, I'm gonna be so disappointed. I was excited to hear they're doing stuff with the brand but reading up on their site it seems like they will be taking down fan projects...

So the modems most people think about, "fax" modems (the little beige boxes that run at 56kbps) are considered smart modems. They have computers in them and can fully control the phone network they're attached to. The first smart modem was from 1981 or so I wanna say, literally called the Hayes smartmodem. You could type commands to change bit rates and other settings. Before that, modems were considered "dumb." Most were 300 or 110 bps. You had to use a physical phone to dial the number you wanted to call, the modem had switches to tell if it's originating or answering (as long as two modems are set differently they'll talk.) and the most advanced feature of those types were that they held the line open, meaning you could put the phone back in the cradle without it hanging up the line. Even earlier were acoustic coupling modems, where you placed the phone handset on a pair of cups with a speaker and microphone, which the modem used to communicate with the phone line.

To anyone who does anything with audio. Would a mono/stereo converter be useful? Like where you can switch between mixing the two stereo channels to mono, using only the left channel or the right, and taking a mono signal and putting it on both the left/right channels.
