11.08.2025 01:29 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 1I saw a post on here today about how you can in fact have "PhD levels of intelligence in your pocket" by following and talking to people with PhDs on here and that's absolutely correct
I adore following experts in other fields because of what cool new perspectives I'll see
I don't really have any answers or anything else, I'm just sick of hearing mine and my friends' credentials bandied around as a marketing buzzword after decades of the public being completely disconnected from the world of research and academia
11.08.2025 01:26 โ ๐ 18 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0thanks to doing a PhD I've met some incredibly brilliant people who are pursuing PhDs and also not and every single one of them has put in so much work
the whole memefied shorthand erases that reality and it sucks especially while people's ability to pursue their passions is being destroyed
I dunno fam, having been through the whole process and made some absolutely incredible friends, I really hate that "PhD" is effectively a shorthand to most people for "super smart" which itself doesn't actually mean anything
11.08.2025 01:22 โ ๐ 24 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0the biggest thing the media portrayals of PhD related things misses is it's about knowing who was and is working in your field so you know who is the go to person about a specific thing
one of the joys of academia is being able to throw papers at each other that are either new or almost forgotten
they are also about communication of concepts, to varying extents depending on your exact field
you at minimum need to be able to tell your findings to someone in your field in an understandable (and I think it's even more important to go further but the incentives aren't there)
a PhD is quite literally about studying a couple of things incredibly deeply, sometimes one single thing even
on top of that, it is, if you are doing basic research, about going somewhere no one has been yet or going further down a path someone else left some flags in
every time I hear about "PhD level intelligence" as a benchmark for anything I think about how mass media has done one of the worst jobs ever at planting the fake concept of what a PhD actually is in the general public's mind

I guess the billionaires paying each other is where we're at with the AI hype machine now and the consent industrial complex is going to kick into overdrive about it
the amount of damage attempting to remove the last vestiges of the ability for people to have careers is going to be absurd

I think that as an indie game dev without a large publisher, your target audience is not gamers in general, it is sickos.
It's hardcore sickos that will be diving the depths of your genre and finding your game, and it is sickos who will be spreading it.
Please the passionate, not the masses.
sickos are a critical pillar of postgaming theory

10.08.2025 16:52 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0if you're making a massively long game where you spend hours upon hours with a cast, they probably should have depth in both the writing and how their character informs the way they play (see fighting games, MOBAs, tactics RPGs especially)
10.08.2025 16:51 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0As for the point about characters, Clair Obscur has some amazing character writing in it AND the combat design leans incredibly hard into giving each character a distinct personality and ways of working as a general party
10.08.2025 16:50 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0specifically with the French bit, you wouldn't know one of the largest corporations in games is a French company based on their output
especially in the current times, one of the most valuable things a game can be is human and not be afraid of Being Too Weird
I think part of why Clair Obscur found such success was being an unapologetically French game in basically every way possible which means it is both very unique to the wider game playing public and also can be a bridge into whole other forms of art if someone is curious enough
10.08.2025 16:45 โ ๐ 8 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0the two lessons I want the industry to take from Clair Obscur are
- your culture/sub culture can and should influence your games
- people like RPGs for characters for their writing AND mechanics
surely there's not another word that rhymes with Ruri that would be a fitting replacement in the title
