A woman stands presenting in front of a projected slide titled βUndertaking a Realist Review as a Novice Realist Researcher: Reflections from a study on Peer Support among Healthcare Assistants delivering Hospice Care at Home.β The slide includes her name, Kasia Patynowska, her role as a Doctoral Research Fellow at Ulster University and Research Nurse at Marie Curie, and lists her supervisors. She gestures with her hands while speaking, in a classroom setting with a whiteboard and ceiling tiles visible.
A woman (Kasia Patynowska) is trail running through a grassy, mountainous landscape, smiling broadly and making a joyful hand gesture with both arms raised. She wears a green running outfit, a hydration vest, and a race bib numbered 232. Rolling hills and rugged terrain are visible in the background under a clear sky.
#Researcher during a day, #trailrunner in the evening! ππ»π
What a fulfilling and enriching day at #UlsterPhDFest with a chance to present some reflections from undertaking #realistreview.
Followed up by a challenging and wonderful #trailrunning in #MourneMountains as part of the #Hill&Dale series!

I sought eye contact and smiled at EVERY person in the park yesterday on my run. Just a big kind smile even during speed intervals! And 99% smiled back, some appeared surprised they were not 'invisible' and looked genuinely happy to smile back!

Indeed! As a slow runner I recognise some of these self-limiting practices which... I decided to overcome last year! I even have a coach now! Me - 5hrs marathonerπ
Working with a coach helped me train better, be braver and trust my abilities more. I'm getting stronger and faster too! #running

Very few of us have access to the track. I do my speedwork in a local park with the workouts I created in Garmin Connect and uploaded to my watch. I use the track on holidays in Poland (there is a free access one next to my sister's home) but I don't really enjoy running on track - bit boring! π

A woman takes a selfie in Belfast, holding a Nursing Times Award 2024 for Clinical Research Nursing, which is inscribed with "Marie Curie Research Nurses in hospices". She wears a navy quilted jacket and stands beside the iconic "Big Fish" mosaic. The Albert Memorial Clock and a modern glass building are visible in the background, with the setting sun casting a warm glow.
Nursing Times award for Clinical Research Nursing finally arrived in Belfast! Great award for a wonderful team of Research Nurses at Marie Curie! Delighted to be part of it!

Deprivation inequalities across the cancer pathway. Compared to least deprived areas, people living in the most deprived areas have a higher proportion of adults who smoke (22% vs 6%), higher proportion of adults who are obese (36% vs 19%), lower proportion participating in bowel screening (57% vs 76%), higher proportion diagnosed via emergency route (26% vs 21%), higher proportion of stage 4 diagnoses (31% vs 24%), higher incidence rate (685 per 100k vs 570 per 100k), lower 5 year survival rate (52% vs 70%), and higher mortality rate (337 per 100k vs 217 per 100k).
This is an important new report from @cancerresearchuk.org.
In more deprived areas there are higher levels of cancer incidence, higher prevalence of cancer risk factors, less engagement with screening programmes, and worse diagnosis and survival outcomes.

A vibrant, expressive painting depicting hospice care at home. The artwork features multiple healthcare assistants in purple uniforms tending to a patient lying in bed under a golden-yellow blanket. A black cat lies across the bed. The painting conveys warmth and care, with a rich colour palette of deep blues, yellows, and reds. Surrounding the central scene, carers are shown providing comfort, administering medication, documenting notes, and communicating. A sense of movement and emotion is captured in the layered composition, highlighting the essential role of healthcare assistants in end-of-life care.
Thrilled to showcase this stunning commissioned painting, translating my research into visual art, at the @mariecurieeolc.bsky.social conference last week! It highlights vital role of Healthcare Assistants in delivering hospice care at home.

Huge, old, never-ending forests!
I currently live in Northern Ireland and all the forests near Belfast can be run around within 1hr. So much tree coverage has been lost here over recent centuriesπ
In Poland forests are much bigger and you can run for hours without doing any loops.

The top 10 new priorities for palliative and end of life care research are:
How do people with dementia experience end of life? How can palliative and end of life care better meet their needs and those of their carers, friends and families?
How can NHS, social services and charities work more collaboratively to provide joined-up care that better meets the needs of people with a serious life-limiting illness and their carers, friends and families?
What kinds of palliative and end of life care and support need to be in place to enable people to die well at home? What skills do staff need? What helps or hinders the delivery of care at home?
What are the best ways to provide personalised palliative and end of life care that meets all the physical, mental, practical, social and spiritual needs of a person with a serious life-limiting illness?
How can palliative and end of life care better meet the complex needs of people with multiple health conditions?
How can communication and care co-ordination be improved across the teams of health and social care professionals caring for people with any serious life-limiting illness?
What skills, training and information do carers, friends and family members need to be able to care for someone who is dying at home (e.g. giving medicines safely by injection, managing incontinence, moving people)? What is the impact (pros and cons) of upskilling the people giving care?
How can the quality of palliative and end of life care in hospital be improved? What helps or hinders improvement?
What are the best ways to provide palliative and end of life care, support and advice at all hours (24/7 or out of hours)?
How can palliative and end of life care better meet the needs of people who live alone, or are socially isolated?
Weβre excited to announce the launch of new research priorities for palliative and end of life care!
These have been created in a project with the JLA and other partner organisations, including co-funders the ESRC and @mndassoc.bsky.social, and guided by people affected by a life limiting illness.

A bird's-eye view of a former Auschwitz II-Birkenau camp showing a wide dirt pathway flanked by parallel rows of barbed-wire fences. Groups of visitors walk along the path, surrounded by the remnants of brick structures and barracks, now reduced to foundations. Green grass contrasts with the somber history of the site, as the path leads toward a guard tower in the distance.
Auschwitz was at the end of a long process. It did not start from gas chambers.
This hatred was gradually developed by humans. From ideas, words, stereotypes & prejudice through legal exclusion, dehumanization & escalating violence... to systematic and industrial murder.
Auschwitz took time.
