The fact that this made headlines shows how far behind the UK has fallen. We used to have DeepMind before Google purchased it - now we're celebrating corporate charity. The UK isn't even a player in this race anymore...

This is embarrassing. Meta spends $100++ million on individual engineering talent then tosses the UK government pocket change and calls it an AI partnership.

Meta just gave the UK government £1 million for ten AI fellowships as part of their "massive AI adoption scheme." Meanwhile, Meta is dropping $100 million signing bonuses poaching engineers from other companies.

11/ And public reaction? A collective shrug. We moved the goalposts again!

When asked if AI is "really intelligent," I reframe the question. Focus on what these systems can and cannot do, how they differ from human intelligence, and practical applications.

10/ Does it matter if internal processes differ if output is indistinguishable?

Fun fact: In early 2025, GPT-4.5 was judged human 73% of the time—more often than actual humans. After 75 years, the Turing test was passed.

9/ So how could we define what the artificial version looks like?

Turing anticipated this philosophical quagmire. Rather than getting bogged in definitions, he proposed the Imitation Game as a practical approach.

8/ "AI can't handle complex reasoning or professional tasks"… until GPT-4 passed bar exams and medical boards.

The REAL problem? We don't even have an agreed definition of "intelligence" for humans. We don't fully understand what's happening in our own brains!

7/ "Computers won't beat chess grandmasters"... until Deep Blue beat Kasparov.

"Go is too intuitive for computers"... until AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol.

"AI can't handle real-world tasks like driving"… until Waymo launched driverless taxis.

6/ From emergence come behaviours that seem very "intelligent." But we humans keep shifting back the goalposts:

5/ But that doesn't make them simple! Scale leads to emergent properties that weren't explicitly programmed. Like how ant behaviors create sophisticated colony structures or life itself emerged from simple processes.

4/ LLMs like GPT-4 or Claude are token prediction engines. This is fundamentally different from human thinking. They don't have intentions or connect words to lived experiences and emotions.

3/ My position? More pragmatic. The question might be less important than we think. Or even meaningless. AI systems occupy a new space that challenges our existing categories.

2/ Position two: AI is advanced mimicry with no real understanding. Current systems are just pattern-matching machines operating on statistical correlation at massive scale. Think Searle's Chinese Room - appears to understand but doesn't.

1/ Position one: AI systems possess a different kind of intelligence. We should broaden our concept beyond human cognition. Stop being so anthropocentric! Intelligence should be defined by what a system accomplishes, not how.
