2026 watch #42 - La Ciénaga (2001). Slice of life film set during an Argentinian summer holiday: coming-of-age teens, bored adults drunk half the time, rampaging kids, casual racism, siestas, simmering tensions, barking dogs and towels and mud and blood. All feels highly naturalistic. #filmsky

2026 watch #41 - Weapons (2025). If you build It they will come. Nice to see Amy Madigan in a major movie again wearing everyone’s next Halloween costume. Maybe it was all the hype, but very underwhelmed by the horror here. Like a C grade Stephen King story was given a proper budget & cast. #filmsky

2026 watch #40 - Lifeboat (1944). Survivors stranded out at sea after their ship is torpedoed by a U-boat. Not much suspense, more an ethical character study from Hitchcock and Steinbeck, but no lesser a chamber movie for it. Notable for Canada Lee, one of only a few times Hitch cast a Black actor.

2026 watch #39 - Sentimental Value (2025). Absent father tries to reunite with his eldest daughter in the most distant way possible. Opens like a comedy, mostly drama, nice to look at, excellent performances, especially Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. Ultimately didn’t move me as much as I hoped. #filmsky

2026 watch #38 - Timecrimes (2007). Rewatch. Dark comedy about a man who travels back in time, makes himself travel back in time, then has to travel back in time again, to try to fix his mistakes. Some decisions seem solely to get a woman naked… but this is a solid time caper nonetheless. #filmsky

2026 watch #37 - Eternity (2025). Think The Good Place in movie form. Three’s a crowd, plotholes abound, but there’s genuine chemistry between the leads and I’ll admit it got me in the feels in the end. But as Olsen’s character wonders, how can your eternity create someone else’s hell? #filmsky

2026 watch #36 - Hamnet (2025). Shakespeare lost a son called Hamnet and wrote a play called Hamlet. The rest is mostly fiction, and that doesn’t matter because this film totally broke me. Went in not knowing what to expect, left a blubbering mess. Jessie Buckley for the Oscar. #filmsky

2026 watch #35 - Reservoir Dogs (1992). Robbery gone wrong caper, in which the apres caper is the entire plot. Quite the entry Quentin Tarantino made with this low budget, high energy, brilliantly scripted first feature in which he somewhat fortuitously gets Harvey Keitel to star & produce. #filmsky

2026 watch #34 - Die My Love (2025). A woman’s playful nature comes up against the rigours of nurture, and with an unhelpful husband in tow begins to unravel. Don’t know if this is less postnatal depression and more the baby kept her sane whilst the world turned shitty. Great performances. #filmsky

2026 watch #33 - A Perfect World (1993). The 90’s were a simpler time, when every woman the hero of the piece comes across wants to drop her drawers. Sins of the father story with Costner as the bad boy and Eastwood as the grizzled cop during his career resurrection period. #filmsky

2026 watch #32 - JSA (2000). Never judge a book by its cover. I always thought this looked like a generic action film from the poster, then I learned it was a Park Chan-Wook film. It’s full of his trademark transitions - in the edit & the script - and it’s my first First Watch 5⭐️ of 2026. #filmsky

2026 watch #31 - Mr. Nobody Against Putin (2025). “Commanders don’t win wars. Teachers win wars.” - Putin. Propaganda in real time during Russia’s war against Ukraine as schools are militarised and one brave teacher Pavel Tanankin takes a stand for the country he loves. I hope this wins the Oscar.

He’ll be looking for a free wartime bunker at the very least.
