It's #BannedBooksWeek, and I think banning nonfiction like this really gives away the game: book banning is a campaign to try to limit people's access to facts and perspectives that don't fit a narrow narrative that people in power can control.

Banning books that depict things that teenagers are really going through does not protect them; it leaves them without resources and role models.

This #BannedBookWeek, I'm grateful for Little and Lion by Brandy Colbert, which offers an unflinching look at teenage mental health issues and the costs of keeping each other’s secrets. Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of the first time I talked someone out of suicide, so this book means a lot.

I also knew someone who wrote a Fringe play called Carbon Man-Dating, about an environmental organization that started matchmaking for their queer organizers. It was a fictional scenario, but still.

I've been to a candidate fundraiser/speed dating event for real, actually! It was for a city council candidate in Minneapolis. A local matchmaking/speed dating service got really excited about this candidate and so the event was born!

I'm reading through a list of banned books, and I was truly shocked to come across multiple LITERAL DICTIONARIES just now. The nonfiction in general is really surprising me: books about historical figures, STDs, global mythology . . . the assault on facts is stunning. #BannedBooksWeek

I'm just realizing that when they say "break things" they don't mean objects they mean things like social contracts of ethics, boundaries, consent, and even state-sponsored laws

I have been saying for a few years now that people really need to take a seriously long look at the center of that venn diagram where the circles are marked "AI Culture" and "Disregard For/Violation Of Consent." The whole "AI Actress" situation is more of why.

ICE admits that up to 50% of arrests in its Chicago raids are "collateral.” These aren't statistics. They are parents taken from their children, neighbors taken from our communities. When does a "collateral" U.S. citizen child's trauma matter? This isn't law enforcement; it's a campaign of terror.

Again: Marginalized people are disproportionately harmed by the spread of "AI" because the people who use it are essentially being trained to think the machine is "like us" & can speak "for us," even as it simultaneously pressures you to disbelieve *Actual Us* when we tell you "it's not & it cant."

I'm nonbinary and have mostly done podfics up until now, but I'm working on recording the audio version of my debut novel, which I'm self-publishing next spring!

It's not an *honor* to have your book banned.

Trans literature has value because trans authors are human beings telling stories in their unique ways. It is profoundly frustrating to see trans authors are only valued when we write about transphobia or when we write hopeful trans stories intended to serve as an antidote to transphobia

I'm no longer Christian, largely because trying to actually follow Jesus was combining with my moral OCD to create a way of life that did have room for my own wellbeing. It's stunning to me how many Christians just aren't trying and don't care.

I agree! And after years of hyping up a particular author I like (first on Twitter, now here and on Instagram), I've been offered an ARC of their next book, which I will also hype up unless something very unexpected happens! It's a win for the author (publicity) and also me (early access to a book).

“Out of the three mass shootings TODAY” is one of the most tragic uniquely-American sentences out there.

Most developed countries average zero per year. We have single days where you have to ask “which” when someone talks about a mass shooting.

No! I complain about the fact that my parents AREN'T nerdy. No Lord of the Rings or Star Wars in my childhood. I grew up to be a nerd who misses a lot of references.

This is the key. It’s easy to come out for the big guys. It’s the unknowns who are getting hammered that need so much more help.
