It’s a big deal that @kayforparks.bsky.social, who is 24 years of age, won her race in District 5. She challenged the status quo and beat the sitting Vice-President of the Park Board. That is no small task. 1/

Far too often, young people (esp. young women) get told they need to slow down or wait their turn. I think that’s nonsense. I’m excited to collaborate with them & advance progressive policies for THEIR generation and the following generations. This is our responsibility, and I’m happy they’re here.

I am in tears as I reminisce about little Kay playing at Bancroft, and now I have the privilege of representing District 5. Life has truly come full circle.

I am proud and humbled to represent the district that raised me. This win goes to our southside community, Minneapolis Public Schools students, teachers, and alumni, our first-generation children of immigrant parents.

Furthermore, we are grateful for the support we received from elected officials across jurisdictions and from labor unions across our state. Your commitment to our collective vision will bring real progress and accountability to our park system.

Additionally, thank you to our mentor @jchavezmpls.bsky.social, a great role model and advocate for our city who has walked this path before me and ensured we had the guidance and determination to succeed. Your unconditional love for our city is inspiring.

This win would’ve not been possible without our campaign team—Ivonne, Amy, Angelica, Ben, Erika, Jovita, Brandon, Iris, Kailleen, Ruti, Francisca, and Carmen. Our campaign has demonstrated to our young people & our city the power of grassroots organizing.

In less than 3 months, Kay for Parks built a movement and brought visibility to a race that neighbors often don’t have educational access to.

Because of your courage, we are here today. Together we have elected our first Latina commissioner to the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

We are over the moon to be sharing this win with everyone. I want to extend my deep gratitude to our ancestors, our Indigenous relatives, our matriarchs, and our beloved community for your resilience and resistance.
