I get the impression he was one of a non-zero number of writers whose response to September 11 was to adopt highly sketchy politics.

...weirdly, one of the reasons I've never read "The Terror" was because of his rightward turn in the early 2000s. I remain curious about it ("Drood" as well), but there were always books ahead of it in the queue where I wasn't going to have to worry about random anti-Muslim sentiment.

It seems notable that the only one of those that did well was Venom (and its spinoffs), which - by shocking coincidence - is also the only one about a character that comic book readers have found compelling as a lead.
