I'm in council housing and it is truly one of my biggest fears that I end up back in private rentals.

We want/need a bigger place but the insecurity risk and extra cost that would be 3x what we pay currently is just not worth it.

Totally, this has been raised. According to English Housing Survey, approx. 40,000 households a year move from social to private - often citing overcrowding, conditions and unsuitability. Often means that they have been pushed past their breaking point, taking extra shifts to cover the hike in rent.

Have you, a family member or friend moved from council housing to renting privately?

I’m a PhD researcher looking into what drives these moves, how it impacts tenants' lives and their views of the council housing tenure.

Please reach out and share among your contacts! πŸ‘‡

Evidence for the rise in housing disrepair claims against councils When I take the bus into Manchester city centre, there is a huge billboard advertising something that wouldn’t have been so prevalent years before: housing disrepair claims.

Honoured to receive this year’s Barnett Prize for my paper exploring the relationship between council housing repairs and maintenance spending and residents’ wellbeing.

I’m grateful to the committee for their recognition and @aaronreeves.bsky.social who helped shape and refine the paper!

chart showing Proportion of households with damp and average housing cost to income ratio, by
ethnicity: England, 2017-2019 & UK, 2021/22-2022/23.

Some minority groups are less likely to live in homes with damp than the White British group, but there are others that are substantially more likely to. This includes minorities with particularly high housing cost to income ratios such as the Black African, Bangladeshi and Black other groups.

Better housing quality cannot explain why ethnic minorities spend more of their income on housing than White British adults.

Many minority adults face high housing cost to income ratios, and are also more likely to live in damp homes.

Thousands of London homeowners face double council tax from April Struggling boroughs are set to increase bills for some property owners in a bid to bring in more cash and help ease the housing crisis

Kudos to Wandsworth, Hackney and Westminster for doing their part in tackling the housing crisis! This proactive move can help ensure more Londoners have the homes they need while reinvesting the premiums on council taxes back into the community.
