I am, of course, a former pupil of Russell Scott, both the original 1882 building and the newer from 1981. I still have the centenary commemorative mug!

⚽️ Then new sports facilities including a field and a Multi-Use Games Area will be constructed when the old school is demolished.

This £14m investment in Denton’s children is very welcome and one I’m extremely proud of!

There’s a public consultation at the school on 13th October 2.30-7pm

The draft plans have been drawn up and the new building will be two stories high and built on what should’ve been the school playing field. The current school will remain operational while the new one is built

With the change of Government I had to make sure Russell Scott stayed in the programme, which it has, and now Tilbury Douglas has been awarded the contract to build, with the DfE directly overseeing the project (not Tameside Council). 🧱🪚

💬 I raised the school’s plight several times in Parliament, had meetings with Education Secretaries and Ministers - lots of tea and sympathy - but it wasn’t until I met Baroness Barran that someone “got it” and Russell Scott was placed on the Government’s School rebuilding programme!

Worst built UK school where kids paddle in sewage and get sick from toxic fumes Russell Scott Primary School in Denton, Greater Manchester, is unfit for kids. Head Steve Marsland says the 19th century building may have to be demolished and rebuilt

🧱 A few years back, it underwent a multi-million pounds refurbishment, and on the face of it the school looks great. I was invited to cut the ribbon. ✂️

‼️ Sadly the work was substandard and done by Carillion. Problems soon emerged. 😱

🏠 But it’s also great to see private sector investment in Denton too. Wain Homes’ Crown Point housing scheme is nearing completion; the new housing block on the former swimming pool site will be beginning soon following a grant awarded by Homes England.

In our meeting I learned there’s 24 major action points to make the town centre more attractive and a place people of all ages want to visit for work, leisure, shopping and to come and eat out.

I really want this government to succeed and I’ve always worked to that end.

But we can’t just pretend everything is going great and what we need is more of the same.

I will make sure we are connected to our communities and make better decisions.
