At no point did I argue against publications.
As we many things work should be compensated and it makes no sense that, take Relx for example, can have Β£1.8billion profit, yet doesn't pay experts for their knowledge and instead expect the unis to cover it for what amounts to exposure for artists.
Not anymore and institutions are always evaluated on their impact. I'm not arguing against publications.
It's never been part of my job description when I was expected to publish. Maybe it should be, but vs everything else it doesn't benefit the institution at all.
So uni is expected to pay for publishing or to access publishing yet also expected to pay for staff time to do labour for the publishers?
Many reasons for people not reviewing, not limited to:
- Unpaid labour, journals with charge Β£1000's yet reviewers work for free,
- Bombardment from irrelevant journals with low quality papers,
- Certain journals just ignore reviews and publish bad work anyway,
- TIME, paid work takes priority
Whilst I'm no longer directly writing papers anymore it's always great to help contribute to some great work.
Not exactly a casual read but my be of interested to some in the solar world. Also some pretty EBSD images.

Nothing unusual tbf. I think its similar to many places, just the apparent lack of awareness from those at the top of everyone that works for them. Gawd forbid they save money by the most highly paid people taking a voluntary pay decrease.
This always comes to mind when the senior leadership of UK universities talk about cuts. Never a cut up top.
A great talk tonight from Lowrie Lavis from Constellium. Hopefully next time we can get the university lecture systems behave with Zoom and not require jury rigging. Hopefully...
SWMA's first talk of the academic year will be on Monday by Lowrie Lavis from Constellium exploring how to make aluminium more lightweight, recyclable and high performing in the automotive sectorπβοΈ

We're starting a technical talk series. The first is an introductory short talk into elemental analysis in SEMs (EDS and WDS).
Hosted by SWMA and open to anyone interested. For new potential users of the technique. We will be hosting online, so sign up if interested! π§ͺ
Amazing thanks!
Could I be added to. My Orcid ID is: 0000-0002-5851-8713.
Thanks!
Great talk hosted by the SWMA tonight at Swansea University by Dr Barnes from Innovate UK on The Race to Decarbonise Transport.
Embarking on an unusual bit of materials science today. We're Focused Ion Beam milling paint flakes from a 16/17th century Venetian painting to see what pigments they used.
Always fun to do cross discipline work and use the fancy machines on things we never thought to do before. π§ͺ
A massive shame Sunak is watering down our climate policies again. He'd rather we trail behind everyone than lead the world in a green transition.
I wish I could be angry but it is so on form it is just sad.
If we are "on track" with the current low effort imagen what we could do if we tried.
Technicians Symposium at Swansea Uni today. Looking at how the uni can better support and recognise the people who help make the research happen.
Have you thought about your technical staff and how much of a difference/impact to your facility they make recently?

Strange weather today at the Bay Campus. Awesome to have this right next to the campus.
Great until we have sea level rises that is...
These are crystals of Iron-Silicon made by a pack cementation process. I was trying to make Beta FeSi as a cheap thermoelectric but instead of a nice coherent layer I got these weird hopper-like crystals caused by a direct gas to solid transition.
The SEM image was taken during my EngD in 2015. π¬ π‘
A mix of technologies and applications is essential for a sustainable energy supply.
Agrivoltaics is the process of using the land beneath solar for agriculture. The shading provided by the panels can be used to improve crop yields, reduce water usage and even protect from extreme weather. π§ͺ
