I'm teaching visual anthropology at the grad level this fall! Please let me know if you've come across readings and multimodal work which you think should definitely be in a visual anthro syllabus! Thanks for sharing! Please also feel free to share with me your own work.

Hi All. I wrote about my experience of archiving images lost to flooding in the Philippines. I dedicated this photo essay to Uncle Anton M. Naval, whom we lost in the flood of Typhoon Kristine in 2024. He was like a father to me. The essay is open access: doi.org/10.1080/1754... #anthrosky

One of the challenges of studying the hometown is dealing with peer reviewers who get upset by a writing style that is deemed to be "too personal." Oh well. Got past a peer reviewer who caved in in the end.

In this article, I think about the controversial inheritance case Llorente vs Llorente in Nabua which lasted for 15 years and which reached all the way to the Philippine Supreme Court, becoming a landmark case on divorce and succession.

You might remember China suddenly limiting its ELT industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this article, I write about the repercussions of this move by the Chinese state on what I call the "raciolinguistic disposability" of Filipino teachers in China.

Hi #anthrosky I'm looking for readings on REPAIR/THE REPARATIVE. Please recommend readings (including yours) that touch on the reparative work that anthropologists have done in the communities where they work. Thank you!

Ever wonder what snow in the swamp would look like? This is 5 miles into the Louisiana swamps in the Atchafalaya basin... it's unreal... having lived down there for the first 28 years of my life, we never saw anything like this.

Smashed records.

The book cover features a colorful and expressive painting depicting scenes of caregiving and labor by Filipina migrant workers. At the center, a woman holds a child close to her chest, while other figures engage in work, such as ironing and childcare. Surrounding the central figures are vibrant, textural elements, including bold words like "Day Care Center," "Reasonable Contractor," and "Mistress of Laundry." The artwork conveys themes of resilience, community, and struggle. The book title, "Caring for Caregivers: Filipina Migrant Workers and Community Building During Crisis," is prominently displayed in bold white text, with the author's name, Valerie Francisco-Menchavez, at the bottom.
