As always, the most courageous in the room are young people so thank you to student journalists at Columbia for being the only outlet to cover Greene’s self-made fall from grace. www.columbiaspectator.com/news/2026/02...
It is beyond insulting for @aaas.org to plan to host Brian Greene, an associate of Jeffrey Epstein, for a plenary talk at #AAAS2026, then cancel it the day before, only for the replacement to insist Greene was a “good scientist” and that he wished we could all hear from him.

What happens when science funding disappears?
At UCSF and the SF VA, labs are laying off staff, trials are paused, and patients are left waiting.
Our new Civic episode breaks down how federal cuts — and now a shutdown — are reshaping science in the Bay Area.

New today: We're petitioning NSF to revert GRFP eligibility criteria to last year's terms, to avoid pulling the rug out from under the earliest of early-career scientists who had every reason to think they'd be able to apply this year. Sign and spread the word!

Please share with anyone who cares about NSF support for graduate students and take 30 seconds to sign and leave a comment.
The deadline for the 2025 Graduate Research Fellowship Program is about one month away and literally no one can apply. #NSFGRFP

Disclaimer: I am NO LONGER part of @standupforscience.bsky.social & haven't been affiliated for months! Was just part of the original team that organized March 7 😊
That would be @erinmorrow.bsky.social doing incredible work as always!
Coming down the home stretch for #McClintockLetters! If you signed up to participate, there is still time.

An important correction in the NYT, to a chart that was shared a lot in recent days & that I shared myself, shows they'd made a mistake with the 18-24 year old turnout, and so it's not the case that age group outvoted all others.
Still: nothing to sneeze at here, still a huge surge in youth vote.
As part of the #McClintockLetters Initiative, members of the Taga Lab wrote op-ed's and letters to their local hometown papers to defend federal science funding. Check them out in this thread and join the fight to defend federal science funding (1/4)!
So important! Please contact your Republican senators, especially Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL), and Sen. Dave McCormick (R-PA). 🙏 amplify!
Thank you, @pleunipennings.bsky.social, for sharing your experience with the #McClintockLetters Initiative, and for highlighting the excellent work of other participants.
Reaching people outside of our academic bubbles is exactly what we need to do!

Ashley Eng writes to MA, “I would not have gotten my start in science without the passionate community of science teachers I had as a proud BHS and UMass alum.” But now, “Federal funding agencies are terminating grants without reason and our valued federal employees are losing their jobs.” 🧪🏠

I hope my #Brookline community sees how these cuts are affecting those around us and joins the fight to defend federal science funding. (2/2) @brooklinenews.bsky.social @samjmintz.bsky.social brookline.news/re-the-world...
As part of #McClintockLetters, I wrote a response to an article sharing how federal funding cuts uprooted a neighbor's life. My path to science was directly shaped by my MA public education, and I wouldn't be the scientist and person I am today without it. (1/2)
So grateful to be one of the 500+ early-career scientists returning to their roots this month. The SNAP team behind this campaign has been such a blast to work with! @snapcoalition.bsky.social

Scientists at UC Berkeley have filed a lawsuit against the Trump admin, accusing of politically motivated cuts to funding.
“I think that if we fight back and we show that our laws still work, it means something to people,” says Sabeeha Merchant, Berkeley professor.

@tktk.bsky.social
For some perspective, the federal government funds *over half* of all scientific research and development conducted by the @uofcalifornia.bsky.social -- and UC is collectively responsible, in turn, for over 8% of all academic research conducted in the United States.

I wrote/interviewed folx shortly after everything started to crumble in Jan, but I was re-reminded that communities prevail. There are amazing people doing beautiful things to improve our communities, and I’m excited to highlight their work. berkeleysciencereview.com/article/2025...
Bezos plans to sell ~$4.8 billion of Amazon stock. That's only 2.5% of his holdings in the company.
That sale roughly equals the proposed ~50% cut to NSF.
IOW, with modest endowment-level growth of Amazon, Bezos could fund the entire NSF shortfall into perpetuity.
