I’m not talking de-aging stuff. This is basic “lighting conditions don’t match between the two source photos”. Don’t make some poor Comper or intern try to fix your laziness. If you’re going to feature this photo, go shoot it!

I figured this would stop 10-15 years ago, but I still see movies (high budget!) come out in 2025 in which the chars were “together in the past” in framed photos, which are absolute photoshop disasters.

Go to a location and shoot the photo together!

The same angle repeats later in the sequence, again to clearly establish the geography and the relationships between the characters. This is how directors like Spielberg help the audience understand the action and never get spatially confused.

With this blocking, Spielberg quickly sets up the geography of the scene, the physical goals of the characters, and even allows for full-body physical comedy to happen within the frame. Other directors would shoot this scene as a wide+closeups, then intercut “to increase tension”.

Practical effects and stunts are awesome. Visual effects are awesome. Design them to work together, and it's magic.

One enraging reaction to the LA fires I'm seeing is: All artists are rich/being an artist isn't a real job/they should have planned better/I'll reserve my sympathy for others. If you are doing this kind of sorting, no matter where on the political spectrum you are, please know that you are awful.
