Story below. Estimates of the numbers protesting range from 90,000 (NSW Police) to 300,000 (Palestine Action).

The crowd filled the one-mile long Harbour Bridge.

However, police intervened to prevent the protest reaching its intended destination: the US Consulate.

If the opposition to a private entrance was mostly a mix of reactionaries, paparazzi, and fansites, that could mean the average Korean citizen doesn't actually oppose it... I wonder if the issue could be brought back with clearer evidence showing the danger (especially considering past tragedies).

I don't remember the source, but I remember reading something at the time about a right-wing politician in Korea using this issue to whip up their base for an easy win against 'elites', getting a ton of people to sign a petition against it, which is why it was cancelled at the last minute(?)

Definitely agree on all these points, communicating about this issue is something I've been putting a lot of thought into. I actually have some plans written up for projects, but getting things to happen is a different matter!! I have possible contacts but... highly disabled and unqualified so...

I'm not that well-read, but thinking of Erica Chenoweth's theory of change where 3.5% of the population being consistently mobilised is very likely to lead to major systemic changes, just raising awareness enough to make an insistent, organised mass movement seems like the key.

A tangent, but my personal main issue (closely entwined with this one) is climate change, and it's the same; if people could actually see the full picture they'd be on the streets every day demanding immediate massive change to save us from destruction. But for most people the threat is still vague.

That sounds like a fantastic class, and I hope you get to teach it someday! I really think most people would reject the current system entirely if they could see the full picture, but it's difficult to actually show that picture with the full impact (that website does a great job!)

The next step is to learn about realistic alternative systems, and movements for change. It's not easy to know how to do this (I'm still at this stage!) but the more people in your circle are awake to the issues, the more you can help each other with research, thinking, planning, and taking action.

I don't have all the answers yet, but I think the first step is to shift your thinking from "the system is bad and needs some major reforms..." to "the system is far, far beyond broken, and we need to fundamentally change the entire basis of our economies and societies into something different."

It's a few years old (and US-centric) but still very relevant, looking through things like this with family and friends can start conversations. When I found this I sat with my parents one evening, scrolling through and getting increasingly angry... then the question arises: "but what can we do?"

Not my usual content, but everyone should take the time to fully scroll through this. Even if you're already sold on the idea of capitalism being broken, this website shows it in a way you'll never forget... a lot of people know "something is wrong" but actually seeing the scale of it is different.
