Fascinated at how news coverage in #roc is reticent to mention how Joe Morelle’s son’s lobbying of Monroe County for AirBNB included sending MC the first draft of opt-out legislation, that they sat on for 200 days before pushing it through at the last minute.

• Please provide all agreements and amendments between Monroe County and any short-term rental platforms to date. • Please provide all payment data, reports, and any other materials submitted by short-term rental platforms under those agreements. • Please provide all communications and records of meetings between the County and Nicholas Morelle and other lobbyists for Airbnb since the state law was enacted. State records show Ostroff Associates, Inc. where Morelle is listed as one of 16 lobbyists on the account, directly lobbied Monroe County officials repeatedly this year.

I requested this info from Bello admin right before Thanksgiving. Typically, they reply to all legislators. Less than 24 hours before the vote, they have not provided any of this. Providing it day of (if they do at all) is not acceptable.

Damning. Another reason to vote no.

Democracy dies in darkness- so why are we going to trust a lobbying firm that fights public power? Monroe county should take advantage of the tools the state has given them to ensure we’re collecting the data and tax revenue we need to keep things running smoothly.

Morelle is extremely close to County Executive Adam Bello. The legislature votes tomorrow. The legislation was introduced as a Matter of Urgency, bypassing the committee process. “Airbnb had months of access behind closed doors, while residents get one rushed hearing at the eleventh hour. Instead of being upfront, the County kept this away from the public until the last possible moment. ‘Trust us to fix it later’ is not enough when the process has already shown us otherwise.” said Kelly Cheatle, a Park Ave. neighborhood resident and local housing advocate. I Ryan Lizza'd this by saving the best for last. TLDR: Joe Morelle's son is a lobbyist for Airbnb, which probably wrote this legislation.
And now, we get no meaningful discussion. Public hearing is same day as vote, also the only time legislators can get to ask public questions.
