AtLAST Forum - February 2025
- AtLAST
Welcome to the AtLAST Forum, a platform for the community to exchange ideas and opinions about the AtLAST project and anything related to it.
Do not miss the first AtLAST Forum tomorrow 6 Feb at 8 UTC. This is a platform for the community to exchange ideas and opinions about AtLAST and anything related to it. There will be two talks followed by a plenary discussion session, see: www.atlast.uio.no/news-and-eve... ππ§ͺ

In this new paper led by Joshiwa van Marrewijk we demonstrated that AtLASTβs 50m-diameter provides the highest levels of correlation of atmospheric signals across adjacent detectors compared to smaller apertures: AtLAST will be great at removing submm atmospheric signal on large scales π

This optical composite image of the spiral galaxy M83, which is seen nearly face-on, is described in detail on the APOD page: https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap190629.html * Star forming regions in pink shine bright within the dusty stellar spiral arms while the central bulge reveals a concentration of old stars.

Keen to see the host galaxy of the MIGHTEE ORC ? Here it is, a massive elliptical that has grown so big by accretion and mergers. - Just published in @rasjournals.bsky.social ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2025MNRA...

The observatories and telescopes that participated in the 2018 multiband campaign to detect the high-energy gamma-ray flare from the M87* black hole. Credits: EHT Collaboration, Fermi-LAT Collaboration, H.E.S.S. Collaboration, MAGIC Collaboration, VERITAS Collaboration, EAVN Collaboration
Light curve of the gamma-ray flare (bottom) and collection of quasi-simulated images of the M87 jet (top) at various scales obtained in radio and X-ray during the 2018 campaign. The instrument, the wavelength observation range and scale are shown at the top left of each image.
The EHTC studied the spectacular flare observed during its second campaign on M87, involving over 25 ground-based and space-based telescopes. The authors report the first observation in over a decade of a high-energy gamma-ray flare.

Being cool, the Spiderweb way πΈοΈ
Marika Lepore led a re-analysis of the central region of the Spiderweb protocluster at z=2.16, combining Chandra X-ray and ALMA SZ data. And we find evidence for a strongly cooling core.
