When my cat was recovering from have cancerous bones removed and she finally got home all she wanted to do was put her head in my neck and lie on my chest for weeks so she would feel safe. Almost all, at least mammals, of any species I've met have some kind of emotional interior and can bond.

There are two many minigames and side quests. I hate Chadley, too, which makes lots of the side stuff worse. That said mini games in the original were often crappy so it's weirdly faithful. If you just keep doing a few side bits only and moving forward, it was fun again for me.
