I would be remiss to not mention this scene from Borzage's Bad Girl with James Dunn - and how similar it is to the scene with Gary Cooper - right down to the subject matter, the articulation of shame and gaze aversion at the end, of an attempt to hide after being so vulnerable.

How he looks self consciously around and bites into the brioche at the end is so true to form in reflecting how exposed we feel when we cry in public. The soft tone of voice, the desperation, the struggle to articulate his thoughts, and the shame at being vulnerable.

The glacier shots while Lew Cody and Alma Rubens are on the run from the Mounties do look spectacular! I know a little about the Nakoda helping the production, iirc there were a few in the film as well. I also know the crew had a contest to see who could stay in the frigid water the longest.

It's horrible what happened during the on location shoots though - a man drowned and Borzage was very shaken by it - swearing off doing exterior shoots on location until Desire in 1936.
