Migrant workers on legal visas trapped in modern slavery Revealed: UK’s employment visas are causing thousands of legal migrant workers to end up in modern slavery

The majority of the casework I do involves people in similar situations to Kavin. Trapped in limbo unable to work and move on to new sponsors. The government's toughening up of rules and increase in costs has made the situation worse.

This is sometimes read as "look 'AI' isn't working". But the opposite is true.

_This_ is what "AI" is _for_. Push down labor power, push down wages, make employment more insecure.

Given recent announcement about Digital ID in the UK, the symposium is perfect opportunity to learn from research in Global South contexts where such systems have long been piloted. The event will also launch the art exhibition with drawings by Karen refugees and how they imagine a fair ID system

Israeli forces are still killing Palestinians in Gaza — many of whom are trying to return home near a line behind which Israeli troops have retreated. Israeli media is increasingly calling this line the “new border”.

I asked the government how it will ensure that Israel does not seize half of Gaza:

We've had reports of people being unable to access their eVisa when boarding a flight to the UK.

The airline made them buy an ETA for visitors to the UK, even though they have the right to live here.

If this has happened to you, we'd love to hear from you

Forty-Eight Hours in Israeli Captivity A journalist captured on a flotilla mission recounts treatment at the hands of the Israeli navy, border police, and prison guards.

The Online Safety Act is Coming for Livestreaming Ofcom has launched a blandly titled consultation on “Additional Safety Measures” designed to implement the next round of duties within the Online Safety Act (OSA).

The limit does not exist when it comes to the Online Safety Act.

Ofcom is pushing at the edges of this law to age-gate livestreaming. This will prevent young content creators from engaging with audiences and put a lid on self-expression.

Ofcom is flexing its powers in the Online Safety Act to impose age verification on anyone who livestreams.

That means locking down accounts of under-18s and forcing everyone else to submit to privacy intrusive age checks.

Don't let activism blink out of sight!

Ofcom wants all social posts to be scanned for 'illegal' content before they appear in our feeds.

And the AI doing it will go OTT. Posts about protest could get removed or suppressed.

Say no to more censorship ⬇️

Terror powers to proscribe organisations like Palestine Action or Just Stop Oil will be enforced through the Online Safety Act.

As we've seen from the heavy-handed policing of protests about PA, proactive scanning will remove any potentially supportive mention of them or Palestine-related content.

Ofcom's latest proposals would mean that:

🔴 Lawful activism could be censored as it happens
🔴 Content about Palestine may auto-delete from your feeds
🔴 The police can clampdown on protest online

With proactive scanning of content, censorship under the Online Safety Act is potentially boundless.
