A three-panel comic.

Panel one: Ben and Chel are hanging out in Ben’s messy, poster-adorned bedroom. Ben is sitting on his bed, holding his guitar in his hands. He looks at Chel, who is sitting backwards on an office chair next to the bed, one arm lying on the backrest and the other propping up her head. With a weary expression, Chel says, “Civilization as we know it might end in our lifetimes… Isn’t that -terrifying?-“

Panel two: Ben strokes his chin in contemplation.

Panel three: Ben smiles and responds, “Actually, it makes me feel a lot better about not settin’ up an I.R.A.” Chel looks at him, unimpressed.

Why comics creators must fight the proposed censorship of H.R. 7661 H.R. 7661 could restrict federal funding for schools over LGBTQIA+ and sex education content. Here's what's at stake and how to fight back.

In one of the pre-Disney books, there was a Hutt Sith lord who had a lightsaber duel with Leia. I always figured that was something you could only attempt in a non-visual medium like a book, because there's no way to have a big space slug fight somebody on screen without it looking absurd.

Yepppp.

A four-panel comic.

Panel one: Chel is sitting in a recliner with a sad expression, slouched back, her hands in her lap. Eve is pulling a book from a bookshelf next to the recliner, glancing down at Chel. Chel says, “We’re living through the end of civilization, aren’t we? There’s no point in even -trying- to fight it.”

Panel two: Eve turns to face Chel, smiles warmly, and says, “I disagree. The world has been through worse than this before, and people still managed to pull it back from the brink. Things will get better, Chel. It’s just going to take a lot of -consistent-, -determined- work from good folks like us.”

Panel three: Chel frowns and says, “Sighhh. I guess so.” Eve, looking perplexed, says, “You sound disappointed.”

Panel four: Chel crosses her arms and answers, “I wanted an excuse to give up.”

Picture of Marjane Satrapi alongside a quote from her. The quote reads:

The world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same...

- Marjane Satrapi, Iranian-French graphic novelist

Thinking about this quote from Persepolis creator Marjane Satrapi again.

A bipedal red fox paints a rainbow across the sky. They have a determined look on their face.

To the right of the rainbow are segments of text from newspaper articles about grim news for LGBTQIA+ folks, especially trans folks.

On the left, there are flowers on the ground, with butterflies flittering about. The discouraging words are illegible faint smudges.

If you have the means, please donate to the Trans Continental Pipeline right now. They are a Colorado based org that helps trans people relocate and they are overwhelmed with requests. Colorado borders Kansas, and TCP has the infrastructure to help get people out.

A three-panel comic.

Panel one: Chel and Ben are seated in the passenger and driver’s seats, respectively, of Ben’s car, as Ben drives them down the road. Chel looks at Ben and asks, “What’s the best thing to do when you’ve got a problem on your hands? Try and solve it right away, or think it over for a bit first?”

Panel two: Ben responds, “Think it over, for sure. You should -always- think long and hard about a problem before tryin’ to fix it.”

Panel three: Chel scratches her chin in contemplation and says, “Yeah… to make sure you go about fixing it in the right way.” Ben grins and replies, “Nah, to give it time to go away on its own.”
