If you genuinely believe that your story deserves telling, I'd recommend not telling it yourself. If it's true, give it to a reporter you trust and let them turn it into an actual piece of reporting that can stand the test of time and be an asset to our profession. Not this self-important garbage.

It's not just the words and the order he put them in that gives me an intense unease here. It's the casual sourcing and massive cliff hangers that — see Butler — are not then supported by the next post. This is bad for this industry.

It seems shortsighted and like a continuation of journalistic malpractice to have a story of this importance being dribbled out in this way with apparently no third-party vetting. Or, if that vetting exists, no explanation of it.

When you write for a publication with a masthead and editors and lawyers and research assistants, you can get away with some of this. I don't think you should, but readers will sort-of allow Voice of God writing because you assume it's been through layers of vetting. None of that exists here.

For all of it's absurdity and lack of self awareness, this story is actually pretty important: A journalist is accusing another journalist of, essentially, distorting the course of a political campaign. I would — totally personally — appreciate some minor self-discipline.

Reading work by a writer you once thought was pretty good—now clearly operating without an editor—is like walking into your favorite bar with all the lights on. You can’t unsee what you’ve seen.
