#Brexit has made only a modest difference to the number of foreign-born people in work in the UK. Leaving the EU has not resolved the dilemma facing all European governments – between maintaining #employment as societies age and political pressure to reduce #immigration.
The Carnegie Endowment and @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social have both documented how "greenlash" — once a fringe talking point — has now entered mainstream bargaining. The default setting in Brussels has quietly shifted: simplify first, justify later.

In this @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social insight @jdportes.bsky.social & @johnspringford.bsky.social provide quantitative estimates of how the non-UK born workforce would have evolved in the absence of Brexit.

There have been various attempts to estimate the impact of #Brexit on trade, but relatively few that look at #immigration.
With access to the EU market via Hungary or Spain, Chinese #carmakers can circumvent the EU’s current countervailing duties of up to 35% tariff on imports of China-made battery EVs. 🇨🇳 🇪🇺

#EUDefence: How to build public support for defence spending in #Europe, by @armida.bsky.social | @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social
www.pubaffairsbruxelles.eu/opinion-anal...
The new immigration regime in 2021 raised the number of workers from the rest of the world by about 992,000. The net effect was a modest rise of 207,000.
According to new research by @jdportes.bsky.social and @johnspringford.bsky.social, #Brexit reduced the number of EU-born workers by about 785,000.

In contrast to Labour's accusations of a Conservative "open borders experiment", @jdportes.bsky.social & @johnspringford.bsky.social find that #Brexit and the new immigration regime raised the number of foreign-born workers in the UK by a modest 200,000.

Even strong supporters of EU integration like @johnspringford.bsky.social of the @centreeuropeanref.bsky.social agree that the government’s claims about the upside of the reset are exaggerated. Springford has suggested the upside to GDP will be only 0.1% over a decade.
