This first SciFi book I remember reading - when I was about 11 - was A.E. VanVogt's "The Weapon Shops of Isher." I fell in love with the genre after that. Hard to call it optimistic. And hard to say time completely moves forward.

Annie Haslem could cover 5 - yes, 5 - octaves with her voice. She's incredible. Renaissance was driven by piano, bass, and her voice. It's a very different band. I think Turn of the Cards was their best, but The Vultures Fly High and Ocean Gypsy both got FM play from this LP in the day.
