Except from "Men at Arms" by Terry Pratchett: "Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while a poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socio-economic unfairness."

You know what's tragic? I don't think we make $50 boots anymore. You can find boots going for up to $500, but they'll be shit quality with an expensive brand name. We no longer make quality products. The rich have all of their HQ stuff tailor-made while we enjoy 100 variants of overpriced $15 boots.

If we made the green energy transition this war would be unthinkable and these authoritarians wouldn’t be in power — not in the US, not in Iran, not in Saudi Arabia, not in Russia. Hydrocarbons are killing our freedom and just plain killing us.

I remain very annoyed at the "actually everything is a war crime and every US government official is a war criminal" crowd because now that we have the actual pro-war crimes administration it's very hard to get people to understand that this is actually quite a bit different

YAYYY! More tree lobsters for the gene pool!

These little weirdos make me so happy. People saw the last handful of surviving GIANT-ASS stick insects and said “They’re not dying out on my watch!”

Iran using FPV drones to do reconnaissance is profoundly non-surprising and it will be deeply embarrassing if it turns out the U.S. was in fact surprised by this

Trump told Palm Beach police chief ‘everyone’ knew about Epstein, Maxwell was ‘evil’ The new information comes as Ghislaine Maxwell was summoned to appear Monday before a Congressional committee.

Trump, who says he had "no idea" at the time that Epstein sexually molested girls, told the police in 2006 that "everyone has known he’s been doing this.” That's according to an FBI interview with the then-Palm Beach police chief.

They made them take down the videos because they would cause "reputational damage" to people like this young man, Nathan Cavanuagh, so definitely don't post this all over the internet with the name Nathan Cavanaugh attached, or this guy might suffer reputational damage. This guy, Nathan Cavanaugh.

I would hate for the job prospects of Nathan Cavanaugh to be damaged simply because there’s video evidence of how vile and ignorant Nathan Cavanaugh actually is.

I don't know if everyone understands this but I bet you got at least a hunch - if you've got a lot of americans going "idk about iran but I'll be honest, we deserve to get your ass kicked here. I don't care if hamburger is unafforable, fuck it." it's over.

Trump's remarks actually meet the test for moral depravity in warfare set out by St Augustine in Contra Faustum (383 CE). That's quite a feat.

Everyone with a platform should be screaming that Trump is unfit to be commander-in-chief.

BREAKING: World interconnected. Economies interdependent. People besides you get a say. Cultivating relationships has long-term value. Picking unnecessary fights with everyone at once: bad idea.

Really sucks to have national leaders shocked by that, and who will quickly forget that they learned it.

“So you just told him it was a gift, and he took it?”

“I said it was for being a true friend of Israel”

“and he suspects nothing?”

“No”

“Then why do you look so upset, agent?”

“Sir, I made seventeen contingency plans for every scenario and he just… took the pager”

“Take a day off, agent.”

Now read this SUPERB piece by the inspirational virologist @angierasmussen.bsky.social, “Thirst for revenge—What Jay Bhattacharya has in common with Stalin’s crackpot science seer Trofim Denisovich Lysenko”

It’s a long piece but well worth your time

What Epstein and his associates did wasn’t just a crime—they deliberately built a system designed to exploit the vulnerable using money, influence, & power.

That’s why this is more than just getting justice. This is about changing that system so that horrible things like this never happen again.

Even if you're a right winger: do you want to work for this administration for another two years, the next round of which will involve much higher levels of Congressional oversight, or do something less painful with your hard-earned law degree?

After many hurricanes, the state of Texas has been significantly affected. The people received $100 million for Hurricane Katrina recovery and $30 million for Hurricane Harvey recovery from the people of Qatar. These funds greatly benefited the people of Texas, and we are proud of our resilience and recovery efforts.

Contrary to claims that Qatar aims to harm American society by spreading hate, we focus on positive contributions. For instance, here's what we are actively doing in Texas.
