David Rizzio, the private secretary of Mary, Queen of Scots and one of her favourites, is violently murdered by Lord Darnley, Mary's jealous husband, and a gang of his supporters, for a number of reasons - Darnley suspects that Rizzio may be the biological father of Mary's unborn child, but it's also suggested here that Darnley and Rizzio may have themselves been lovers. The act sets in motion a chain of events that shaped the rest of Mary's reign as well as the future of Scotland.
