It’s actually surprisingly comfortable. There’s a bench so your feet are free to work the treadles, and the suspenders allow you to keep your neck straight rather than bent down. I’m a little tall for this loom, but it’s really not too bad.

The passementerie loom is a brilliant study in efficiency and versatility.

Paper filled with patterns stitched together. The Abegg-Stiftung holds several 1640s napkins from the same workshop that produced the nautical napkin design punched into the new set of cards. There was once a tablecloth with the same borders, but like so much, it didn’t survive the Second World War.

There are mermaids in them holes.

I’ve been weaving for a while and I’m no longer interested in just recreating the structures in historic drafts. I want to understand how those drafts were woven by the people who put pen to paper two centuries ago, and for me, the best way to do that is to do it the way they did, as best I can.

The cloth is “A Beautiful 5 Shaft Diaper Draft,” recorded by Silas Burton in Fairfield, Connecticut, August 29, 1807.

“The front wing of the harness…will have knit on it double the number of helves that each of the other wings have: and when drawing, there will be left out opposite the figures one heave to two threads drawn…” J. and R. Bronson, The Domestic Manufacturer’s Assistant, Utica, 1817.

Using passing comments from a few 19th-century sources, we discovered one way that weavers worked with them @newburyschoolofweaving.org It’s too much to write about here, but you can read all about it in the school’s newsletter from August, 2024, “A Mystery Unraveled.” It works like a charm.

After years of making knitted heddles I FINALLY have an opportunity to use them on my own looms. The big mystery with these heddles was squaring them with all of the pattern drafts that were woven using them, which require an uneven distribution of heddles on various leaves within the same space.

“A Beautiful 5 Shaft Diaper Draft,” recorded in 1807 by Silas Burton. It’s a spot weave that makes a pattern of wheels and diagonal lines.

🤯 Are you working with them?! I stalked them so hard when I was setting up my damask loom and have always wanted to visit. They were so helpful, and I love to see more international bast fiber collaboration.
