(8/9) The policies that guard one group’s fertility while discarding another’s also fuel abortion bans. At the heart of both fights is the question of who gets to control if, when, and whether someone reproduces.

(7/9) Their fertility is protected against their will, because doctors see them as more deserving of motherhood. That’s the quiet side of eugenics: guarding the reproduction of some, while pushing others toward sterilization.

(6/9) Even when doctors say no, women keep asking to have their uterus removed. Because they’re in pain, they’re scared, and they’re done waiting for help that never comes. But many are still denied that choice.

(5/9) As Andréa Becker, a medical sociologist and author of Get It Out: On the Politics of Hysterectomy, puts it: “We assume the lack of racism for white women will improve their healthcare, but it also made doctors want to protect their fertility at rates that other women didn’t experience.”

(4/9) Meanwhile, the NIH spends more studying erectile dysfunction than PMS. In this system, your uterus only matters if it might make a baby. The cruelty doesn’t stop there. Women of colour are steered toward hysterectomy. White women are blocked from it.

(3/9) Doctors can’t explain what’s wrong. Research is nearly non-existent. Conditions like endometriosis don’t show up on scans and aren’t taught well in med schools. It takes seven to ten years, on average, to get diagnosed. If you're lucky.

(2/9) Part of the reason? In the U.S., hysterectomy has become the final stop for women who've begged for help for years and been ignored. For many, it becomes the only way to end the nightmare: “No, let’s get it out.”

A new male birth control pill has passed its first safety test in humans.
The pill, called YCT-529, doesn't use hormones. Instead, it works by blocking a form of vitamin A that the body needs to make sperm, temporarily stopping sperm production.
