I rembered to post the stadler flirt documents pgm.sh/dir/files/me...

Also by design docs, I mean the literal, contractual design documents, not the press release by stadler

1. Hence why I think it was a mistake and why they pulled the document from their website.
2. Actually, they do list it sometimes

Nowhere in the design documents is power output mentioned, but battery capacity (~1MWh) is.

I didnt click on that one, my bad. Seemingly in battery mode those flirts only use one of their trucks (half of the rated full horsepower). I'm unsure if that is a limitation of them being tri-mode or if its a general limit due to power draw considerations

19.02.2026 23:19 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Yeah I dont think you can modify a set to not have the power pack without major modifications. Regardless, if you no longer needed all of the space, I'd say convert it for passenger seating tbh

19.02.2026 23:17 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

700kW for the whole unit? Do they only have 350kW trucks then?

19.02.2026 23:16 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I think its literally just someone seeing the "MW" in marketing and assuming it'd be the power output. We know the batteries will have 1MWh of capacity, hence why I think its likely a mistake. Also the document has been pulled from stadler's website.

19.02.2026 23:07 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I know they have versions without the power pack, I think he's saying in the future these could be converted to only use catenary and not need the power pack, which I dont think is the case.

19.02.2026 23:05 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It says 1 MWH, not 1MW, and the 2.8 was what texrail had. Metra's contract and design documents dont have power output on them, lemme upload these for others to see

19.02.2026 22:55 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Not that I know of tbh, I think that even if they electrified the power pack would still be there, just with the rectifiers, inverters, and anything else that isnt a battery. IIRC they stick a fair bit of stuff that would normally go into the roofs there.

Also interesting thing I just realized, the axles on the cars will be powered but the ones on the power pack wont be? Id think the opposite would be the case tbh... bsky.app/profile/catr...

19.02.2026 22:47 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

Actually rereading, these have 4 powered axles? That would mean 2.8MW total.

19.02.2026 22:45 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

These are notably not the same as the american Flirts, which use a power pack. I'm willing to put my money on the metra versions using two 700KW drive axles on an up to 4 car set, just like TEXRail www.stadlerrail.com/api/docs/587...

19.02.2026 22:33 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

I just remembered: these also wont need to wait for a massive prime mover to ramp up to 900rpm, which can easily take 10-12s on an MP36. Even with similar horsepower and weight, that'll be a major improvement.

19.02.2026 14:35 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Im gonna go ahead and say that the 1MWh was someon in marketing confusing the storage capacity with the motor power. Who knows tho. Either way I dont doubt these will vastly outperform the diesels they're replacing.

19.02.2026 14:33 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Oh yeah that is kinda funny, UP conductors werent issued that rulebook until the changeover. I can attest to it.

On their absolute worst day and if Stadler hides concrete in random places for some reason.

I can take a look through the specifications later today to see if there's any acceleration stats that we can compare to existing Metra rolling stock

19.02.2026 13:59 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

All 6 are routinely open, just they aren't routinely full. Metra rules mandate all cars be open during the rush

19.02.2026 13:58 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm saying if this brand new bemu maxes out the per axle weight limit, it will. I'm also saying that the likelihood of that being the case is incredibly unlikely, especially as the existing flirt akkus are less than half that and I think it's likely the motors will produce more than 1 megawatt.

19.02.2026 13:50 β€” πŸ‘ 7    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 3    πŸ“Œ 0

I think during rush hour it's good to have, but anything between the hours of like 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. could probably be a two car set.

19.02.2026 13:40 β€” πŸ‘ 2    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

A set typically found in the BI coach yard (6 cars and mp36) vs Joliet sets having eight cars

19.02.2026 13:36 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 2    πŸ“Œ 0

that is exactly what I said in the first sentence of my post

19.02.2026 13:27 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It should be noted that even the official design documents (which I FOIA'd) dont include the expected power output, but they do define the battery capacity at 1MWH.

19.02.2026 13:11 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

As it is right now. I think they want to please the people riding it with a direct train downtown but come on. I wonder how things will change upon CAHSR being a thing and there being a dedicated passenger ROW to gilroy

I wouldnt say extremely underpowered tbh. Even if every axle on the train is the maximum allowed weight of 48,500lbs (which, lets be clear, is extremely unlikely given the size of those railcars), they'll have similar lb/hp as the existing BI sets (and much better than the JO sets).

Do you have a link to this? That maximum speed is wrong.
