The partisanship of mayors has no detectable effect on police spending, police employment, crime, or arrests Across hundreds of cities and three decades, there is no impact of a mayorโ€™s partisan affiliation on crime and arrest rates.

Another fantastic paper in Science Advances (gold open-access):

Dual pathways of concealed gun carrying and use from adolescence to adulthood over a 25-year era of change Distinct patterns by life-course stageโ€”adolescence versus adulthoodโ€”reveal dual pathways for concealed gun carrying and gun use.

A bit slow on posting this one, but it is worth the wait. This fantastic article on gun carrying dropped last week on Science Advances: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/.... Congrats to authors Charles Lanfear, David Kirk, and Rob Sampson.

We share a commitment to retaining women in the academy. I try to remember that women can participate in the creation of bad climates too, and all departmental members (men, women, non-binary, gender queer, etc.) share a responsibility for creating an inclusive and functional department.

Gender and retention patterns among U.S. faculty Women faculty are more likely to leave their jobs than men, most often due to workplace climate, rather than work-life balance.

Some big research out in Science Advances: want to understand retention of women in the academy, then you have to read www.science.org/doi/full/10.... The tl;dr: retaining women is about keeping a good workplace climate, not work-life balance.
