A titanic cloud of gas and dust, light-years distant, yet so vast it was as though it hung in the air directly in front of me. And I sat in my ship, and I looked at it for a day.’ ‘Just that?’ Taenar asked. ‘Just that,’ Xela said quietly. ‘For the first time, I had the freedom to do something that did not matter. No one could use my inaction against me. No one could leverage it into an advantage over me, and I did not do it in order to advance myself.’

She continues: ‘The drukhari do not see how well they have caged themselves. They lurk in Commorragh and congratulate themselves on escaping the clutches of She Who Thirsts, without realising that by doing so they deny themselves anything worth experiencing. They are just as constrained as any one of you craftworlders on your Paths. The difference is that they are kept in their place by the knives of their fellows, rather than by ancient dogma.’

There are aspects of Garth Brooks' writing that I struggle with, but you can't deny that he really *gets* what's interesting about Drukhari
