#Reading "Courageous Love" by KC Richardson right now, which has a cop as the #butch protag, and my eye rolling is going strong

I avoid these topics in my lesbian books: Teenagers, wallowing in death mourning, and I struggle with 'no-communication' books. Maybe I need to add cops to my avoid list?

Cops are highly problematic when it comes to the LGBTQ community

Do you really want to alienate a chunk of your audience right from the start?!

It's off putting, to say the least

Pretty tone deaf

Yes, it's a power fantasy that's easy to add, after all in every single case I've read (I think) the cop has been the butch

Sometimes a hard butch, sometimes soft, but cops are easy butch material

But ... modern authors ... don't protag a cop

The number of lesbian romance / erotica books I read that have one of the protagonists as a police officer is ... too many

I would have thought that lesbian authors would be more aware of the historic issues with police and the LGBTQ - and the modern ACAB movement - but it seems not

LGBTQ Americans, not just trans folk, should start applying for asylum to Canada NOW.

We're happy to take you all!

Photo of a newborn baby Pygmy falcon from the San Antonio zoo. Its mouth is open and eyes closed and it's next to a small coin for size context.

This amazing, teeny tiny, squid-faced floof is a baby pygmy falcon. They hatch out looking far too relatable and like a big mood re: today's world

(It looks like they don't have an account here yet to share, photo is from the San Antonio zoo!)

The pacing is awful, with the entire book's plot taking place in the last few chapters.

The idea of the book is great, the actual book, not so much. I can't recommend the read, yet I see it being given 5-star reviews on goodreads...confusing, but each to their own.

The failing is in the characterisation, with Angel being more human and relatable than the all around weird Kim. Kim's a self described asexual, that's cool but what isn't is the fact that the only character development Kim gets is she becomes obsessed with sex with Angel. Asexuality is dropped.

A romantic sci-fi-adjecent comedy, the romance is 99% about miscommunication and misunderstandings, so if that trope is not your jam you will hate this book. It's a lighthearted fluff read, with lots of sci-fi references that nod to its origins.

It's the author's first book, and I've read worse.

Blurb: "Kim could tell at a glance Angel wasn’t the average attractive yet poorly disguised extraterrestrial scout. Angel’s memory loss cover story? Lame. As a science fiction geek, Kim felt herself uniquely qualified to watch Angel and thwart her dark mission…once the alien got around to it."

When your terminator-alike character, Angel, has a more attractive and fun personality than your human, then you know something has gone wrong.

Kim's twisted logic monologues take up 75% of the book, and they don't develop the character, they belabour her annoying aspects. Placing Kim aside ...
