No government should ever concern itself with whether its people "appreciate their sex". Fuck off.

I know mainstream media sucks

But there are still journalists doing good work, smaller magazines, podcasts, etc

I frequently give talks to audiences at biotech companies and universities

I've seen that changing minds is possible, even if it's hard and slow

In assessing the nyt, I looked at publisher AG Sulzberger’s own words in an interview w David Remnick in ‘23. He defended its trans coverage while acknowledging there are “bad faith actors who are trying to undermine trans people and attack trans rights”

What kind of actor has the nyt been?🧵

Does The New York Times Want to Eradicate Trans People? — Assigned An analysis of its coverage reveals a pattern of misrepresentations, deceptions, distortions, the exclusion of trans voices, and the endorsement of contempt.

The New York Times coverage of trans issues has repeatedly resulted in experts and others complaining that their words were twisted and misrepresented... but only those quoted from on trans supportive side have that complaint.

Coincidence or eliminationism? @billiejsweeney.bsky.social dives in.

U.S. court allows state bans on gender-affirming care for adults in unprecedented ruling While bans on trans youth’s care have been numerous in recent years, this is the first to restrict care for transgender adults.

NEWS: It was never about the children.

Transgender adults now face care restrictions after the ruling of the federal appeals court in Richmond, Virginia.

"To encourage citizens to appreciate their sex"

Gotta say that this is some extremely creepy language. And the argument basically is... that if the prevent people from treating gender dysphoria (adults, in this case), that they'll just... stop having it? That's not at all how any of this works.

9. This ruling is likely to spread fast: it effectively wipes out the Fourth Circuit’s 2024 Kadel precedent, threatens similar Medicaid cases nationwide, and helps build the legal framework for restricting or eliminating transgender adult healthcare.

8. The ruling comes as Heritage openly pushes adult care bans. After Kevin Roberts said the goal was to “outlaw it” through “radical incrementalism,” this decision appears to hand that movement a ready-made legal framework for dismantling trans adult care step by step.

7. Worse, this precedent reaches far beyond Medicaid. If states may constitutionally “encourage citizens to appreciate their sex,” what stops ID marker bans, drag bans, clothing bans or even forced conversion therapy to "appreciate their sex?" The opinion offers no limiting principle.

6. The court’s logic is hypocritical: it says the ban applies equally to everyone, even though only trans people seek this care for gender dysphoria. As Sotomayor noted in Skrmetti, that is like banning interracial marriage for everyone and calling it equal treatment.

In Skrmetti, the Supreme Court found that the Tennessee legislature did not have to take any third party-on either side of the debate at its word to find a good reason to ban certain procedures. The legislature could look at the evidence and decide for itself which plan would best promote the flourishing of Tennesseans. If the Tennessee legislature can legitimately prohibit these treatments, then the West Virginia legislature may legitimately determine that providing Medicaid coverage for these procedures is not worth the cost to its taxpayers. Simply put, if a State can reasonably ban it, of course a State can reasonably refuse to pay for it.

5. The opinion outright says that states can legally ban transgender adult care after applying Skrmetti to adults.

median total cost was $59,673 for a male-to-female vaginoplasty and $148,540 for a female-to-male phalloplasty).
15 While Skrmetti involved sex-change treatments for minors, disagreement among experts about the efficacy and necessity of transgender surgeries extends to treatment of gender dysphoria in adults. For example, "like West Virginia, a majority of States do not cover 'genital gender-affirming surgery' under their Medicaid programs," demonstrating a lack of consensus in this area. Amicus Curiae Br. of State of W. Va. at 2 (citing Michael Zaliznyak, et al., Which U.S. States' Medicaid Programs Provide Coverage for Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy and Genital Gender-Affirming Surgery for Transgender

4. More broadly, the ruling signals that courts may treat restrictions on transgender adults’ care as constitutional. It directly states that Skrmetti can apply to adults as well, saying that there is "disagreement among the experts" about trans adult care.

It is not irrational for a legislature to forgo Medicaid coverage of arguably ineffective and dangerous procedures and allocate its limited resources to covering other treatments. What's more, States may legitimately recognize and "celebrat[e]" the "inherent differences between men and women." Virginia, 518 U.S. at 533 (internal quotation marks omitted). And it is not irrational for a legislature to encourage citizens "to appreciate their sex" and not "become disdainful of their sex" by refusing to fund experimental procedures that may have the opposite effect. Skrmetti, 605 U.S. at 516-17.
The Supreme Court's decision in Skrmetti forecloses any argument to the contrary. By holding that SB1 passed rational basis review, the Supreme Court made clear that prohibitions on sex-change treatments are not inherently irrational. And West Virginia provided legitimate reasons that rationally related to its policy. Therefore, we find West Virginia's Exclusion easily passes rational basis review.

3. The justices wrote that states may deny Medicaid coverage for what they called “arguably ineffective and dangerous” procedures for transgender adults and may seek to make citizens “appreciate their sex,” endorsing that aim as rational and constitutional.

2. In doing so, the panel extended the Supreme Court's decision in Skrmetti—which held that transgender youth care bans were constitutional—to transgender adults, the first federal appeals court in the country to do so.

The ruling pdf is directly in my story.

4th Circuit Rules That States Can Compel Trans Adults To "Appreciate Their Sex" Via Care Bans They ruled that states "encouraging citizens to appreciate their sex" through care bans is a constitutional goal, affirming West Virginia's Medicaid ban for trans adults.

1. Horrifying ruling out of the 4th Circuit.

An all-Republican 4th Circuit panel has just ruled that states can compel trans adults to "appreciate their sex" by enacting care bans.

It even directly says that trans adult care bans are legal in the ruling.

Reynolds signs Iowa law barring local trans civil rights protections City and county civil rights commissions may no longer protect Iowans from gender identity-based discrimination under a law signed by Gov. Reynolds.

Within just a few hours of this morning's genocide warning from the Lemkin Institute, the 4th Circuit ruled that trans adults can have our care banned and be forced by any means to "appreciate our sex", and Iowa made it ILLEGAL to protect trans people.

The important thing to remember is that The Big Bang Theory, a multi-camera show, spun off Young Sheldon, a single-camera show, which then spun off George and Mandy’s First Marriage, a multi-camera show. This is the first time in tv history that this has happened. We live in unprecedented times!!!!
