Veneration of the military is a cultic practice used to insulate the state from the banal reality that the primary purpose of the army is murdering brown people and smashing leftist political movements.

And if that's the purpose of an opinion column, great! More power to ya! But you can't expect people not to notice a pattern in which radical ideas get to be normalized and which don't, especially if it's really, really obvious that it's only ever extreme right-wing or militaristic positions.

NYT Opinion puts out some pretty dang extreme stuff; it just doesn't strike people as extreme because they've been desensitized to it for decades that these are "acceptable" opinions to hold, in part because NYT Opinion plays a roll in normalizing them among elites.

Because let's analyze this for a second. Can you even imagine, for a millisecond, NYT publishing an Opinion piece written by a radical trans author that made the case for abolishing gender markers in state documentation and medical intake forms altogether? Of course not.

Also, not to put too fine a point on it, but if the point of an opinion column is to convey opinions to its leadership, how come it only ever seems to find opinions for one position, namely the one consistent with its editorial politics?

it is conflating the views of different writers. coincidentally, the range of writers the NYT has published on the subject range from actively masturbatory at the thought of brown people death (Bret Stephens) to solemnly reconciled to the necessity of the lesser races being purged (Ross Douthat).

By the way, in the interests of constructive dialogue instead of just dunking, her initial post in the thread is *correct* that people are conflating the views of different writers, but I think that's a separate matter from the idea of some kind of institutional mandate that deflects responsibility.

Not to keep belaboring this point, which I'm sure you're all sick and tired of hearing from me, but I think this marks a profound misunderstanding of how "the marketplace of ideas" is supposed to work, which requires people to take ideas and their implications seriously!

I do understand that this is, fundamentally, what the press believes their job is, but I would argue that if the role of a newspaper is simply to serve as a message board for elite debate, it is not an institution or occupation worthy of much intrinsic respect or deference.

The internet is *teeming* with prophets and influencers who are claiming that the *timing* of the strikes, just before the blood moon (lunar eclipse) that coincides with Purim, is a prophetic sign of (variously) a modern-day defeat of Haman moment; God's judgment; a period of pre-end-times turmoil.

In Iran, one article even asked, “Is he King Cyrus, or is he Esther?” The Jewish people celebrated a miracle brought about by one person, Esther, who had the courage to confront the spirit of Amalek the spirit of evil calling for the annihilation of the Jewish people. This is the same spirit now operating through the demon-possessed mullahs in Iran, who believe they can usher in the 12th descendant of Mohammed through an apocalypse and force every person on the planet to bow to Islam. In case you're wondering how some sectors of the Christian right are seeing Trump's war in Iran, I've just read several articles seeing a prophetic meaning in a coincidence of Trump's strikes, the assassination of Khameni, and a blood moon occurring on Purim (tomorrow).

Just so we’re clear on this, that means the admin can’t rely on arguments that this is somehow not war because limited in scope/duration. it also means that it is an illegal war.
