I once left a review saying I would have given more stars but their ceaseless demand for reviews was really off putting.

Who might themselves be having a bad day and less generous than they would on an average one. Bill shouldn't have to suffer the wrath of his boss because Greg gave him a 2 star review that reads "forgot to bring my ketchup, had to ask a second time"

Yeah at that point just have a pass / fail system. To me a 5 star review should be a rare thing,much like a 1 or 2 star.
