Day 27 - Bounded #sciartseptember. In the deep sea a pair of shrimp will begin living in glass sponges and remain trapped inside the sponge once they get larger, the shrimp will be bound to the sponge for the rest of their lives.

Day 22, Fellowship. A sketch from the work I did during my last fellowship which redescribed a deep sea benthic ctenophore Tjalfiella. Unlike other benthic comb jellies, Tjalfiella has three openings to its gut, a primary mouth and 2 secondary mouths on its "arms." #sciartseptember

Got a little busy today with work, so a little bit of a cheat, but for #sciartseptember prompt niche we have the various animals that call the hydrothermal vents there home, each filling a paticular niche.

Catching up on some prompts for #sciartseptember Day 15, Spawning. Typically 7-10 days after the full moon numerous coral species (particularly around the GBR) will spawn and release thousands of eggs at night

Day 16: Rift #sciartseptember . Deep in the sea numerous species often call the numerous submarine canyons as home including the curious and adorable rattails

Introducing Nicole Pittoors with her artwork called "Fauna of the Deep" It's a detailed digital illustration of several deep sea creatures such as a yeti crab, tubeworms, deep sea corals,... Nicole created this image for the 8th International Symposium on Deep-Sea Corals and 7th International Symposium on Chemosynthesis-Based Ecosystems Artist statement: “My path to the deep-sea began with a paintbrush, using art to capture the beauty and vulnerability of marine ecosystems. Now, as a deep-sea biologist specializing in coral ecosystems and hydrothermal vents, I've realized that scientific discoveries often require more than data to reach their audience. My work aims to complement research publications by translating biological processes into visual narratives that make science accessible. Because deep-sea ecosystems exist beyond human experience, art offers a way to spark curiosity about the deep-sea, and that sense of wonder is the first step towards protection. The power of this approach was beautifully demonstrated during Schmidt Ocean Institute's expedition to Argentina's Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon in July 2025. As millions of citizens watched live streams of lush deep-sea ecosystems, Argentine artists began creating their own interpretations of the ROV footage - from detailed scientific illustrations to whimsical comics, and across every medium imaginable. This spontaneous response didn't just amplify public interest; it catalyzed a national conversation about ocean science that ultimately led to scientists testifying before Congress and sparking national discussions about restoring research funding."
