An image showing the text of an email that reads: Today is March 15th.

The Ides of March.

The day Julius Caesar ignored a fortune teller, dismissed his wife's nightmares, and walked into the Senate thinking it was just another Tuesday.

Spoiler: It wasn't.

23 stab wounds later, Rome learned an important lesson about workplace safety and the dangers of unchecked ambition.

But here's what makes the Ides of March so perfectly Roman: Caesar's last words probably weren't even "Et tu, Brute?" That's Shakespeare. Ancient sources suggest he either said nothing or muttered "You too, child?" in Greek.

Even in death, Rome was dramatic.

 Why we're telling you this:

Because we know you're the kind of person who marks historical assassinations on your calendar (we know you are), you need the right shirt for the occasion.

Now *that's* how you do a holiday email. Bravo, Echoes of Antiquity!

As part of my plan to make more time for my actual work, I've been unsubscribing from email lists. Tons of them. It's so damn satisfying and hopefully will result in less "oh, wait, I got an email!" in the future. (Kid emails me to circumvent no cell phone rules so can't just turn email off.)

That feeling when you're searching for info on Eritrea and getting lots of stuff about Ethiopia. Apparently their struggle for freedom is ongoing. 😂

Just decided out of nowhere that I want to try to do something kind of crazy to give myself more time to work on my own projects. We'll see if it actually works. At the very least I'll probably get more done trying even if I don't reach the full goal, so that's probably a win.

I was already pissed about the CIA sunsetting the World Factbook but man it's extra annoying to have to hunt for things on Internet Archive that should be easily accessible even if they aren't updating them anymore! #researchproblems

Note to marketers: If you're thinking about doing a sale for International Women's Day and it's for "look skinny" leggings, maybe fuck off with that.

Adventures in time change: after husband set all the clocks forward during the day yesterday, we tried to tell the teen it was bedtime an hour early. 🤦 It didn't work because she's 16 and can read a clock.

My husband has been going around changing clocks all day and I am so confused as to why the kitchen is in a different time zone now.

What is Reverse Decluttering and How Can It Help You? - Minimalist Crafter Reverse decluttering is a mindset shift for decluttering that focuses on what you want to keep instead of what you want to get rid of.

I know it's not spring but I'm already doing some pre-spring cleaning. If you're ready to start, reverse decluttering might be a good approach. minimalistcrafter.com/reverse-decl...

My eye doctor is the greatest hype woman. Always happy and excited. Calls me young and beautiful. (OK, she was talking about the state of my optic nerve, but I'll take it.)

I’ve got to say the last-minute Whole Foods shoppers were a lot less fun than the “last-minute” (two days ago) Walmart shoppers. #stormprep

I don’t know why this is true, but it is: tuna salad goes on saltine crackers, egg salad on Ritz crackers.

After watching the Lilith Fair documentary I'm listening to Lilith Fair music and got reminded of my favorite Lisa Loeb song ("Do You Sleep?"). Haven't heard it in years; still know every word. (Fun fact: Lisa Loeb remains the only celebrity anyone has ever told me I look like. And we both knit!)

Agreed! I want to say Knitting from the Top but they are all so great. And I can't imagine my knitting life without the treasuries of knitting patterns. So yes, all of them.

So anyway, go pick up a knitting book. Learn from the ancestors. And share what you find out! If you already knew Walker I'd love to know what your favorite book of hers is. 6/6

Zimmermann, Walker, Maggie Righetti, Deborah Newton, Mary Thomas, and on and on, those are my knitting grandmothers, too. And I don't know if people who learn on the Internet have access to that wisdom. I feel sorry for them if they don't. 5/6

Knitting Icon Barbara G. Walker Dead at 95 – Knitting

I wrote a sort of newsy post about her here: knitting.craftgossip.com/knitting-ico... but what I didn't touch on is how I wonder if knitters coming up today even know who she is. I learned the basics from my grandma and mom but what I know of techniques I learned from books. 4/6

I use her stitch dictionaries all the time, and all of this in not even to mention her work in feminism, goddess mythology, tarot and I-ching. What a life. What a legacy. 3/6

First it's really hard to imagine that something like that hasn't always existed, but it's still pretty new in the history of knitting. She also helped popularize knitting garments from the top down and mosaic/charted knitting. 2/6

So sad to hear today of Barbara G. Walker's passing. The first book I read when I started writing about knitting professionally was Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting without Tears, which sent me quickly to Barbara Walker when I learned she (Walker) invented the slip slip knit. 1/6 #craftsky 🧶

Must be the end of the year because I normally write two pages of morning pages and today I wrote six. Concepts of a plan? Maybe.

Did my volunteer session at the library this morning, grabbed lunch for the fam, went on a walk, to the grocery store and made fudge and candied pecans. Now (2:45 pm) finally have time to work. Want to nap. Happy busy days.

Feeling a little superstitious as I bought planner pages today. The last time I did that was for 2020. Didn't really need them much, as it turned out.

Whew, finals week even has mama stressing. We both cried over a TikTok song about a stressed out reindeer and a hare who is proud of him no master what happens. ❤️

Year two of Pantone giving us the color we deserve. This year's was like if meh was a color; next year's is literally nothing (white, aka Cloud Dancer). It's OK, Pantone, we gave up, too.
