A day to celebrate, but a day also to reorganise for the next struggles.

The Greek penal system, unjustly confuses asylum seekers that were forced to drive the boats, with the smuggling networks, allowing for thousands to be imprisoned with sentences exceeding 50 years and hundreds of thousands of euros in fines.

Most of the people accused had already spent 6-10 months in prison on pre-trial detention, but now they will be able to complete their asylum applications and seek safety and a new start.

The court accepted the claim filled by the defence lawyers, pointing at the Greek Migration Regulation, which identifies that people seeking international protection cannot be charged for smuggling themselves or fellow asylum seekers.

Thanks to the great effort by @hrlpsamos.bsky.social and fellow lawyers, 11 young men who were charged for illegal transportation of third country nationals who do not have the permission to enter the national territory of Greece were acquitted.

In what may prove an historic day for justice, the Appeal Court of Samos accepted what was obvious for everyone else. Asylum seekers are not smugglers.

Η έρευνα –με συμμετοχή μέσων όπως η Solomonη η El País και η Tagesspiegel– φωτίζει τη διασταύρωση τεχνολογίας και ανθρώπινων δικαιωμάτων στα σύνορα της Ευρώπης.

Το Υπουργείο Μετανάστευσης της Ελλάδας αρνήθηκε να απαντήσει σε συγκεκριμένα ερωτήματα για λόγους «επιχειρησιακής ασφάλειας». Η διαφάνεια παραμένει ζητούμενο.

Τα νέα προσφυγικά κέντρα που κατασκευάστηκαν από το 2021 περιλαμβάνουν συστήματα ασφαλείας με βάση την Τεχνητή Νοημοσύνη. Παρά την αυξημένη επιτήρηση, συνεχίζουν τα προβλήματα όπως ο υπερπληθυσμός και οι ελλείψεις υπηρεσιών. Η τεχνολογία δεν λύνει τις ανθρωπιστικές ανάγκες.

Παρά τις δημόσιες διαψεύσεις, υπάρχουν ενδείξεις ότι η Ελλάδα πραγματοποιεί ομαδικές επαναπροωθήσεις – κάτι που παραβιάζει το δίκαιο της ΕΕ. Drones με κάμερες υψηλής ανάλυσης βοηθούν στον εντοπισμό και την απομάκρυνση μεταναστών.

Οι ελληνικές αρχές χρησιμοποιούν τα δεδομένα για να εντοπίζουν και να επαναπροωθούν πρόσφυγες πριν διασχίσουν τα σύνορα. Το 2023, η Τουρκία ανέφερε 222.000 συλλήψεις μεταναστών που προσπάθησαν να εισέλθουν στην Ελλάδα. Η ΤΝ είναι κεντρική σε αυτή τη στρατηγική.

Η περιοχή του Έβρου είναι πλέον από τις πιο επιτηρούμενες της Ευρώπης. Έντεκα πύργοι επιτήρησης με θερμικές κάμερες και ραντάρ καταγράφουν κινήσεις. Η Τεχνητή Νοημοσύνη διαχωρίζει ανθρώπους, ζώα και «ύποπτες» κινήσεις.
