BIRDBASE dataset tracks ecological traits for 11,589 species of birds Γ‡ağan Şekercioğlu was an ambitious, but perhaps naive graduate student when, 26 years ago, he embarked on a simple data-compilation project that would soon evolve into a massive career-defining achiev...

#ICESASC25 was a game-changer! Stepping outside of my usual research into the world of #fisheries has been valuable. Understanding where #GreatCormorants fish is a priority to manage interactions with human activities. New connections and prospectives!

Back from an incredible #EOU2025 in @bangoruniversity.bsky.social ! Presented my work on the spatial behaviour of #GreatCormorant🐦 - it was fantastic to discuss with such an engaged audience and meet new and old friends. The trips around North Wales were the perfect cherry on top! #ornithology

Time to bathe!πŸ’¦

Many birds have water-repellent plumage. Using their beaks, birds apply oil secreted from their glands.

Cormorant feathers don’t have this oily coating. This reduction in buoyancy allows them to dive underwater to catch prey.🐟

Our #CormorantCams are up and running to explore how our breeding Cormorants are doing on Sheep Island and Strangford Lough!

Few sites in the UK and Ireland are consistently monitored for Cormorant productivity, so we’re excited to see what our nest cameras capture! πŸŒŠπŸ“Έ

Small-scale fisheries threaten seabirds in the Mediterranean A recent study has confirmed that wintering seabirds in the northern Adriatic Sea are regularly perishing due to the activities of small-scale fisheries. Conducted between 2021 and 2023, the research has provided valuable new knowledge on the influence of sea depth on bycatch rates. The study, publi...

Observing nature reduces pain, study shows New research has shown how viewing nature can help people feel less pain. The neuroimaging study, led by a team from the University of Exeter, found that people looking at natural scenes experienced less pain than those viewing a city. During the research, 49 people were given minor electric shocks...

Last month at @sosbangor.bsky.social was so inspiring. I had the opportunity to elaborate and present my first preliminary #PhD results. Thanks to the great supervision of @marikimient.bsky.social, all professors and students interested in my research on #GreatCormorant. See you soon!

Big tip for ECR and #PhD students in #ecology: take lots of photos of everything you do in the field/lab. Get others to take photos of you. Lots. Create an image library. You'll be thankful for the rest of your career for their value in communicating your #science, like in this brilliant thread πŸ‘‡
