2 nights ago I had a very vivid dream that a young Leonard Cohen was leaning in a doorway, reciting poetry to me.

A portal of portent, one might say...

Where things stand with the Department of War A statement from Dario Amodei

I think one of the most staggering industry shifts in my 16 years as a tech reporter is that it’s not become a question of β€œshould our product help the government kill and/or surveil people?” but β€œto what extent?”

THAT, and the perverse notion that it's "people like that" who stop any "real work" getting done.... By, y'know, insisting on proper HR procedures, elf'n'safety, open recruitment...

And it's all about a dodgy global "poll" with error-bars so wide you could park a humvee in them...

every single macro-type person i've spoken to this week has been very much in the 'ah it'll blow over' camp

i don't understand why, but this is the consensus

And still, so-called patriots queue up to condemn their own Prime Minister for refusing to join in with all this…

One of those "You have the wrong friends" problems.

Nearly two and a half million people have Open University degrees.

The University of the Third Age, for people in retirement, has 400,000 members...

My ICQ UIN is 7231680. That number is burned into my consciousness. I inadvertently learned that you could see private conversations in public chat rooms when using Telnet instead of a browser on GeoCities. I can tell you the difference in audible dial-up handshakes between 1200, 2400, 14.4 kbps modems. I needed a edu email address to join Facebook after my university was admitted. We were here at the beginning. We made social media. You wouldn't be in my Top 8. I have usernames older than you.

"Not capable of graduating?" A ton of students here and across the post-92 sector come to university through access courses, take foundation years, etc.

They graduate just fine, thanks. Tickell should confine himself to plans for a rowing lake on campus or something, if the edge needs taking off.

Aside from the appalling glorification of violence, this video appears to trample all over the IP of various third parties.

I hope they all sue the fuck out of the White House.

I remember when β€˜Brexit Means Brexit’ became a way for silly people to insist that they supported something they could neither justify nor explain. Obviously the context is very different, but something similar is already happening with the β€˜war’ in Iran. And it’s mostly the same people doing it.

Inequality rising when everyone is getting richer is bad. Inequality falling, but only because everyone is getting poorer, is also bad.

The problem with this argument from @chakrabortty.bsky.social is that - in contrast to the 1990s and 2000s when, as he says, things *did* get better - since 2010 we've had very low growth (and stable/falling inequality).

Demographically, most progressive defectors are frustrated lower middle class Millennials - not affluent urbanites or a PMC β€˜lanyard class'. Though they have liberal social values, many are frustrated graduates; Millennials with a mortgage or rent they are struggling to afford - primary school teachers, IT support or clerical workers. In short, the face of the modern social democratic voter.

Labour is losing voters to progressive parties disproportionately.

And they are not mainly "lanyard" professional or working classes, the oppositional forces of Blue Labour and right discourse.

It's squeezed millennials in service careers. Which our politics ignores.

No doubt the absence of the former Independent who got 80% of the vote made this a rather particular circumstance.

On the one hand, a clearly deranged lunatic in the White House starting a dangerous illegal war on Iran with already-serious repercussions for the region and world...

Or having a pop at Keir Starmer.

You just knew which side the Right would come down on.

Press Association comment from Quakers in Britain

This evening, for the second time in a year, the Metropolitan Police raided a Quaker Meeting House and arrested a number of young nonviolent activists who were meeting there on the grounds that they were conspiring to commit a criminal act.

The room in Westminster Quaker Meeting House was let to Take Back Power to hold nonviolent direct action training. Quakers support the principle of nonviolent direct action, which aims to protest without harming people.

Oliver Robertson, head of witness and worship for Quakers in Britain, said:

β€œFor Quakers, faith and action are inseparable. Peaceful protest, prayer and nonviolent action are integral parts of many Quakers' religious life.
β€œWhilst we take the planning of criminal acts very seriously, we believe that this incident is a deliberate targeting of committed young people who want to make our country a more equitable place. This raid is part of a systematic stifling of dissent.

β€œThat this is the second time in a year that the police have raided our meeting house dramatically illuminates the broader trend in the UK of cracking down on those who disagree with the government. The right to protest is fundamental to our democracy. It's a key part of how people make their voices heard between elections.”

Statement from @quaker.org.uk about tonight's police raid on Westminster Meeting House. Guys, I don't think they're buying the Met's line about it all being a cover for plotting "mass shoplifting"
