On final point; Broadcasters & politicians in this first flush of liberty before we see what Syria will be; stop talking about new possible refugee flows, don’t make that the first question, they left because of Assad & the presumption should be that those who left because of him may now return
In 2013 when Assad gassed his own people everything was in play in Syria, Russia had a relatively small presence & Aleppo yet to be destroyed; how many hospitals would not have been bombed, how many lives would have been saved & how many millions of refugees would have stayed ?
So wonderful to see Syrians & not US troops toppling statues of the blood soaked Assads, but given how brittle & weak the regime was without its allies you have to ponder what might have happened had the US & UK acted in 2013 when the red line of chemical weapons was crossed
