More affordable than an OG copy of the album at least!

09.12.2025 14:36 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah made for radio and jukeboxes. The 7 is much sought after. www.discogs.com/release/6405...
09.12.2025 14:22 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0The digital jukebox in Glasgowβs wonderful Doublet had an avant-garde jazz section with the single edit of John Coltraneβs Ascension π₯π₯π₯
09.12.2025 13:22 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 1Daily Record is using the same language and arguments as they did then, just for another group, ie treating them as a danger, brainwashing kids etc. I remember how homophobic Scotland was in the 90s and the Records KTC campaign felt like the last gasp of that. Sadly itβs reemerged as transphobia.
09.12.2025 12:33 β π 74 π 5 π¬ 2 π 0Yep the language and structure of their arguments is exactly the same: the othering, raising the threat of sexual violence etc.
09.12.2025 12:26 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I remember them being against the repeal of Section 28 with hysterical headlines about porn lessons in school and the like
09.12.2025 12:22 β π 9 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Radio 4 and BBC and Channel 4 News and all the papers completely skewing the Peggie story so your average person will have no idea what actually happened. Doesnβt this make you furious? Integrity in journalism is dead, not just in the US
09.12.2025 09:11 β π 595 π 161 π¬ 18 π 18Good to see, although the paperβs reporting and op/ed broadly leans GC.
09.12.2025 10:06 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Was surprised to see this tbh. Although theyβve got still McKenna churning out his usual pish.
09.12.2025 09:56 β π 13 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If the reporting on the Peggie decision tells us anything, it should be that the way news gets reported in this country has little to do with truth, and much more to do with narrative - as well as whose heavily spun press release lands on journos desks first.
08.12.2025 17:28 β π 743 π 208 π¬ 9 π 5The real victim at the centre of this absurd case is very clearly Dr Beth Upton
To witness the way in which sheβs been dehumanised and vilified by Peggie and their (Sex Matters) legal team, the tribunal judge, the British media, and UK politicians has been beyond horrifying
Solidarity Beth
The institutionally transphobic media are already trying to spin this as an outright victory, but the truth is that most of her claims were dismissed, thereβs no trans bathroom ban, and the judge recognised Peggieβs vile comments about Pakistani flood victims & trans people for what they were.
08.12.2025 15:10 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Also canβt be emphasised how much this went hand in hand with the war on terror and Islamophobia. The liberal & cosmopolitan vibes of the first term were gone by 2001.
06.12.2025 14:47 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yes, they definitely legitimised those views, both through their policies and willingness to entertain βlegitimate concernsβ. From the proudly bigoted Blunkett to the Ed Stone to Starmer, itβs all part of the same trajectory.
06.12.2025 14:34 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Weβre very lucky that he was openly clueless about music but was happy to employ those who did.
06.12.2025 12:45 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0That whole Virgin ambient series is so great, not least cos so little of it resembles whatβs now marketed as ambient. Ocean of Sound and Jazz Satellites are personal touchstones.
06.12.2025 12:26 β π 4 π 1 π¬ 2 π 1He established his own language, but I love how he placed that in different contexts, eg pirate radio jungle, harmolodic funk, noisy Japanese prog etc. Very much focused on the future, challenging orthodoxy whether in the mainstream or experimental worlds.
06.12.2025 12:18 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Oh definitely. I really appreciate his ongoing interrogation of his own ideas, his openness to new approaches, the playful yet artistically curious bringing together of different musicians with Company etc
06.12.2025 12:15 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0At the end of the day, noise is just sound and like anything else, it can be done well or not.
06.12.2025 12:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I am interested in asking artists about their motives and process, but ofc theirβs isnβt the last word. As the DB comment shows, context is everything, and the Dada antics of the Dutch school are often more challenging to musicians and audiences than βoutβ sounds.
06.12.2025 11:59 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I do think too much emphasis can be placed on the intention behind noise being provocation. Noisy and dissonant textures just sound good.
06.12.2025 11:45 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Bailey wasnβt averse to playing harsh noises to annoy certain people - see the Mark Wastell piece in the current Wire.
06.12.2025 11:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0The Blair government talked up the necessity of economic migration while introducing increasingly harsh anti-migrant legislation. Playing into media hysteria about migration was a convenient distraction from the failure of their neo-liberal policies and paved the way for the horror of Farage.
06.12.2025 10:55 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0"I was introduced to Herbie Nichols' music when I still considered myself to be a mainstream jazz singer. It was also a moment when I was reconsidering whether or not I wanted to be a mainstream jazz singer."

Known as Palestine's Nelson Mandela, he has been in prison for more than 23 years and subjected to brutal abuse.
04.12.2025 09:00 β π 133 π 51 π¬ 2 π 1transphobes using money and power to bully little kids is absolutely no different from mobs turning up to intimidate refugee families, and you should treat anyone who so much as excuses either of these things with complete contempt
02.12.2025 22:21 β π 298 π 90 π¬ 2 π 1We're watching the wholesale burning of every scrap of dignity afforded to trans people in the UK, their rights, their medical services, their employment, their place within society, their bodily functions.
It is a disgrace, and a disgusting stain on the government and media of this country.
I've got an EOY essay in here about the dialogue between jazz/improv, underground hip-hop and electronic music, and the exciting new open-genre music emerging from it.
Plus a full page of jazz & improv reviews, inc the incredible @xcrswx, Marilyn Crispell, Angharad Davies & John Butcher...
There's not a single anti-trans campaigner or group with a major platform on twitter who haven't posted *horrifying* things and it's a stain on our entire media ecosystem that not a single major outlet has done even basic reporting of it.
01.12.2025 13:56 β π 257 π 70 π¬ 6 π 3Had a similar experience on a local Glasgow to Stirling train a couple of years back. Complained to Scotrail on twitter in real time, who said it left the depot like that. Doubt many of the stations en route had working loos either.
