Day one of commuting into the office. After a lifetime of dreaming about living and working in New York City, I’m finally in that timeline. ✨
Today my 7-year-old took his $5 from his grandma for our road trip, walked into a gas station in Iowa, and bought himself a 5-hour energy. We caught him before he could guzzle it down, but I can’t stop laughing about both the selection and the fact that the cashier didn’t blink an eye.
While campaigning, Zohran Mamdani frequently noted that New York is the richest city in the richest country in the history of the world, and that its government could do more for the people who live here. Tonight, he was elected mayor.
A sneak peek at the cover of next week’s issue, which celebrates Zohran Mamdani’s historic win. #NewYorkerCovers

Outside of the ICE facility in Portland, Oregon, one can find some protesters in inflatable costumes—frogs, a unicorn, a butterfly picking up a cigarette off the asphalt. The chaos Donald Trump keeps pointing to is harder to find.
Sitting in a packed airport waiting for a delayed flight. I plopped down next to a woman with her knees curled up, nose in a book. Realized it was Ferrante’s “The Story of a New Name,” the same very book I’m reading right now. I pulled it out of my purse to show her and we had a moment.
George Saunders and Zadie Smith speaking beautifully about the power of empathy and “the clear water” of literature at #NewYorkerFest. Such a joy to listen to a thoughtful conversation between two of our best writers.
Ken Jennings delights liberal-arts alum at #NewYorkerFest: What's the difference between a pizza and an English major?
A pizza can feed a family of four.
Kate Berlant and Jacqueline Novak had the crowd rolling at #NewYorkerFest. Seeing them tonight was a good reminder that the best friendships are deeply creative, full of serendipitous discovery through riffing and improvisation.
Picked up these two at Powell’s today. It feels like time to finally read “My Brilliant Friend,” and I’m a big Wesley Morris fan.
Portland is a beautiful, vibrant city full of some of the kindest, most welcoming people you’ll meet anywhere, not to mention some incredible activists and artists. Fuck this guy.
Curious about fact checking at The New Yorker? Helfand and our deputy head of checking, Teresa Mathew, are answering questions at r/IAmA. Ask yours here:
Something I’ve remembered this summer, from Wu Tang to LCD Soundsystem: Life is short. Buy the tickets.
Tonight’s overindulgence at Powell’s. I don’t need new books to add to my TBR stack, but then again, I do, I do!
At my first Portland Pickles game. Impeccable vibes. I love this city.
We’ve reached the stage of parenthood in which we can watch The Simpsons together as a family, and this is good. Holds up!
When you're being inundated with all this Fourth of July brouhaha, don't forget what you're celebrating, and that's the fact that a bunch of slave-owning, aristocratic, white males didn't want to pay their taxes.
It’s a proud northwest tradition to honor the solstice with a torrential downpour.
Sometimes I am in such an acerbic mood that nothing will help but Fiona Apple, on LOUD. Begging this woman for a new album to get us through 2025.

He’s a disease that must be cut away.
This whole conversation is generous and vulnerable and very uplifting. Recommend.
Instant regret for quoting “Ace Ventura.”
Loo-hoo-ser-her.
Sometimes a Sunday clean blows, and sometimes it’s the only thing that will soothe my weary soul. Good jams help.
Portland, Oregon SHOWED UP to say #NoKings in America! 💪

Hell is empty,
And all the devils are here.
The correct way to connect the authoritarian presence in LA and the Big Beautiful Bill is that the bill gives the government the resources to do this in dozens of cities at once. So if you don't like what's happening in LA, it's coming to your town if the bill passes.
A herring is a fish.
When a herring is preserved by salting and smoking, it turns red and smells.
It's so pungent that it's a great diversion to distract hunting dogs from their trail.
Now, a ‘red herring’ refers to anything that diverts attention from the issue at hand.
